CHINESE CONFIDENCE
(Rec. noon) CHUNGKING, Aug. 13. Marking the fifth anniversary of the start of the Battle of Shanghai, the Army newspaper, “Takung Pao,” asserted that the nation was determined to counter-attack soon and regain the city. The “Daily News,” lamenting the fact that China has not had a large air force since 1937, believes that the tide is definitely turning with the arrival of United States flyers, and expresses the hope that they will drive the Japanese planes from the skies of China, and carry the battle to the enemy in his own islands. A Chinese Army spokesman, quoting intelligence reports, said that Japanese transports carrying oyer 20,000 troops were sighted oil the Gulf on Tonkin on August 7. Thendestination was not indicated. The Czechoslovak Government in exile has conferred the Czech Croix de Guerre upon Marshal Chiang Kaishek, with a citation expressing admiration for China’s long resistance to the Japanese aggressors. JAPANESE CASUALTIES (Recd. 2 p.m.) CHUNGKING, Aug. 13. Heavy fighting continues in Kiangsi, in which 1500 Japanese were killed and wounded. About 20,000 Japanese are desperately holding LJnchwan against Chinese attacks. SHOT AT TOJO. WASHINGTON, August 12. The Associated Press of America says that Mr. Kilsoo Haan, Washington representative of the Chinese Korean People’s League, stated that he had received a report from the East, which he believed to be true, that a young Korean patriot had shot and slightly wounded the Japanese Prime Minister (General Tojo) on June 17. Mr. Haan said that in the ensuing excitement gendarmes opened fire, killing Major Yuzo Fujita, a prominent army aviator, after which the Japanese rounded up 92 young Koreans in Tokio. Their fate is unknown. LIST OF”""PRISONERS LONDON, August 13. It is announced that the full list of the war prisoners and civilians in Japanese hands was not aboard an exchange Kship which recently arrived at Laurenzo Marques, as expected. Inquiries are being made as to how and when the list was sent.
