COBDEN NOTES
fIH’R OWN CORRESPONDENT. 1
At a meeting of the Cobden School Committee, the Secretary reported having been successful in obtaining a further supply of chalk. A letter was received from the Canterbury Education Board, in reply to a suggestion by the Committee that owing to the shortage of paper, the Board give permission for the use of slates in the infant classes up to Standard I. The Board replied that it did not agree, and pointed out that such a move would be a retrograde step. The Headmaster reported that the children had subscribed £l2 towards the Education Board’s appeal for patriotic purposes, and a further £3 had been handed to the local Committee. Miss Corby, of Redcliffs, has been appointed to the staff, and will commence duties on September 7. Owing to vandalism, the Committee have been compelled to place chains and locki on the gates.
