Mr. I. Elder, who has been on the clerical staff of the Public Works Department at Greymouth for the past eight years, will leave on Monday on transfer to Westport, where he will be clerk-in-charge. Mr C. W. Dassler, of Methven, has arrived to replace Mr. Elder at Greymouth.

Mr. H. W. Grant, manager of the New Zealand Railways Road Services at Hokitika, has received notice of his transfer to the position of stationmaster at Studholme Junction. Mr. R. V. Frederic, chief clerk of the New Zealand Railways Road Services at Hokitika, will replace Mr. Grant as bus manager.

Captain S. E. West has been promoted to the temporary rank of Major, as from July 1, 1942. Major West was formerly on the engineering staff of the Greymouth Borough Council. Another promotion of interest to the West Coast, and announced in the latest Gazette, is that of W. J. McNeight to be Second Lieutenant. Lieutenant McNeight is a former West Coast Rugby and League representative.

Mr. Edward John Hallinan, of Taylorville, died at his home, yesterday, aged 64. Mr. Hallinan, who was born at Ahaura, had lived practically all his life in the Brunner district and before his illness worked at the Dobson mine. He was a member of the Brunner Druids’ Lodge. He fs survived by his wife and daughter, Mrs. J. Creagh, Taylorville, and one brother, Mr. Michael Hallinan, Brunnerton.

The death has occurred of Mr Alexander Manuel Ferguson, chairman of directors of John Burns and Co., formerly for 30 years Consul for Belgium in Auckland. Mr Ferguson, who was 78, came to New Zealand towards the end of the last century and was engaged in farming and journalism. Later he joined the staff of John Burns and Co., becoming a director. He is survived by his wife, two sons, and two daughters.—P.A.

The death of Mr. James Hepburn Spence, a former resident of Rimu and Kokatahi, took place yesterday at the residence of his sister, Mrs. A. O’Neil, Christchurch. Mr. Spence, who was 73 years of age, and unmarried, was the eldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. David Spence, of Rimu, and in the early days was engaged at Rimu in the gold mining industry. He later took up farming at Kokatahi. He is survived by five brothers, Alex (Hokitika), George (Koiterangi), David and Thomas (Christchurch), and Samuel (Stratford), and four sisters, Mesdames A. O’Neil, M. Mann and M. Barr (Christchurch), and M. McLaughlin (Sydney).
