SIR JAMES ALLEN’S BEQUESTS. DUNEDIN, August 11. Under the will of Sir James Allen, whose estate has been sworn at

£45,000, bequests are: £5OO to All Saints’ Church £2OO to the Salvation Army; £5OO to the Otago University; and £2OO to the New Zealand Nurses’ Memorial Fund.

CONSTABLE CHARGED. AUCKLAND, August 10. On remand from North Auckland, Herbert Hunter Barrett, aged 41, appeared in the Magistrate’s Court, charged with attempting to murder Mate Soko Urlich.

At the request of the police and with the consent of defending counsel (Mr. A. Wilson), Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., granted a remand until Monday next. The police said they hoped that by then a date would be fixed for the accused to appear at Kaitaia.

TE AROHA’S MISHAP. WESTPORT, August 11. When the motor-vessel Te Aroha encountered heavy seas and shipped a considerable quantity of vzater the engines failed after the engine-room had become flooded. After floating in practically a derelict state for several hours the ship was luckily seen wallowing by the motor-vessel Gael. A tow rope was secured to the Te Aroha, and she was brought into Westport to-night in a sinking condition. The engine-room was flooded to a depth of several feet. The Westport Fire Brigade’s motor -pump was requisitioned to pump the water out of the vessel.
