CHEESE TO BUTTER

CHANGE OVER NEXT MONTH WELLINGTON. July 29. It is announced by the Mmister of Marketing (Mr Barclay) that an order is being prepared tc- be effective from August 1, directing that all suppliers who during Ihe last two seasons have changed ove- from butter to cheese supply shall now revert to the creamery which they supplied before the original change-over, that is, during the 1939-40 season. ' In addition, the Dairy Supply Control Order, 1941. and special orders issued to individual suppliers under the Primary Industries- Emergency Regulations will be revoked. The Minister said that these steps were being taken to give effect to the new production target for th'e 1942-43 season of 90,000 tons of cheese and the maximum production of butter, in accordance with the request o(« Britain. The completion of this new dairy supply control order, taken in conjunction with arrangements for a special payment of l|d per lb butterfat in respect of supply delivered for the manufacture of butter during the coming season, automatically released the Government from any liability in respect of individual cases of hardship and loss by redundancy in respect of materials and buildings purchased or erected by dairy companies themselves. The Minister added that the Transport Department had decided that tne collection of dairy products from farms must be arranged on a basis which would conserve tyres to the maximum extent possible, and the dairy companies are being advised accjrdingly. Should transport requirements necessitate further adjustments within the industry these must be treated as a separate problem and one entirely divorced from the oresent change-back from cheese to butter production resulting from Britain’s request.
