RACING AND TROTTING

MEETINGS TO COME.

July 25.—5. Canterbury Hunt. August I.—Christchurch Hunt.

TROTTING.

July 25:—Auckland. August 22: —Forbury Park.

Scratched: Noble Fox and Whackie were withdrawn from the Winter Cup at 5.10 p.m. yesterday.

Treasurer: Treasurer gave himself a wrench while going out to work recently and had to be eased up. The trouble came at an unfortunate time, and it is doubtful whether he will be fit for the Winter Cup and other races at Riccarton.

Fashionably-bred:—M. J. Wadley has received a yearling colt, who will be trained for Mr. E. Steele, his breeder. He is by Bulandshar from the imported mare First Cast, the dam of the speedy two-year-old Grilse. The colt has been for the last few months at the Grange Stud, near Wanganui. Wadley is training at Ricarton.

American Champion: Coming from a long way back in the straight, Whirlaway won the 50,000 dollar Massachusetts Handicap at Suffolk Downs last week, setting a new track record of 1.48 1-5 for nine furlongs. Bounders was second and Attention third. The winning stake was 43,000 dollars, which brought Whirlaway’s total to 453,730 dollars. Whirlaway now becomes all-time top winner, surpassing Sea Biscuit’s record earnings of 437.730 dollars by 16,000 dollars.

Finished Racing: Retrogression, a four-year-old gelding by Magnus from Retrospect, has come to the end of his racing career. He did his early racing in the Clifford colours, and then was sold to Mr. D. McFarlane, for whom he showed promising form late in his two-year-old season. He failed to repeat this form at three years, and he was passed on to Mr. V. Holloway, with no better results, and at the end of last season he was given a long spell. He resumed work recently, but broke down badly in a sprint, and he was given away, to be used as a hack.

Night Eruption Retired: Night Eruption, winner of the Members’ Handicap at Trentham, has been retired from racing and will take up stud duty next season. Night Eruption was a bargain of the sale ring for she cost her owner, Mrs. L. C. Faith, Te Horo, only 40‘guineas at the national sales in 1937. She is a brown mare by Nightmarch from Molten and for her inches one of the gamest and most solid of her sex. She won 12 races, including three open sprints at Trentham, and just under £3OOO in stakes. Her dam was by Paper Money from Lava by Solferino fro mFormless, and belongs to the great family which produced Bon Reve, Wakeful, The Toff, Noctuiform, Talking, Nightwatch, Clarion Call and Paper Slipper. Throughout her career Night Eruption was trained by J. Putt at Otaki.
