Miss C. C. Roper, Coal Creek, has left for Christchurcn.

Mrs. W. H. Walmsley left to-day on a visit to Christchurch and Dunedin.

A Sydney cablegram announced the death of Sir George Beeby at the age of 73 years. He was a High Court Judge, and an ex-Minister in N.S. Wales Cabinets.

Mr E. F. Thompson, of the Traffic staff. Railways Department, Greymouth. has been accepted for service in the Royal New Zealand Navy, and will leave shortly for a base.

The oldest practising solicitor in Southland. Mr. John Lachlan McGillivray Watson, died at Invercargill last week at the age of 79 years. Mr. Watson had been a resident of Invercargill all his life, and he had been a member of the Bar for more than 50 years.

The engagement is announced of Herbert Roy. only son of Mr. and Mrs. 11. Williams, of Alexander Street, Greymouth, to Joyce Margaret, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. Dyett, of Mersey Street, St. Albans and ‘formerly of Greymouth.

Sergeant. O. T. Grattan, formerly of the staff of the Magistrate's Court, at Greymouth, who enlisted at Greymouth in the early stages of the war. has returned from overseas, and is on duty in New Zealand. Sergeant Grattan was wounded in the first Libyan campaign.

The death occurred in Christchurch yesterday of Mr. John Jackman at the age of 75 years. For more than 50 years Mr. Jackman was in the employ of the Lyttelton Times Company, Ltd. He rose from office boy to accountant. Mr. Jackman was an enthusiastic cricketer. He leaves a widow, three daughters, and one son, Mr. C. K. Jackman. a Canterbury and New Zealand representative cricketer.

A Press Association telegram from Dunedin, to-day, announced the death of Doctor Kenneth Ross, eve and ear specialist, and a noted figure in New Zealand golf. He was champion of the Otago Club on 14 occasions, provincial champion eight times, runner-up for the New Zealand amateur title once, and winner of the Jellicoe Cup in 1926.

Mr. Fraser left by air, this morning, for Australia, where it is intention to undertake discussions with Mr. Curtin and the Commonwealth Government on the war situation and other matters of mutual interest to the two countries. Mr. Fraser is also meeting General MacArthur. The American Minister to New Zealand (Brigadier Hurley) travelled to Australia on the same plane. Other members of the party are Mr. C. A. Berendsen, permanent head of the Prime Minister's Department, Mr. B. C. Ashwin, Secretary to the Treasury. Mr. W. O. Harvey, Private Secretary. Brigadier Hurley is accompanied by the Military Attache to the Legation, Colonel J. H. Nankivell, and the Private Secretary, Mr. J. E. Horner. It is not expected that Mr. Fraser will be absent from New Zealand for more than a few days.—P.A.
