REEFTON NOTES

[OUR own correspondent.]

REEFTON, June 3

There is a good deal of influenza at present in Reefton, and although the complaint is not serious it has forced many residents to have a short spell in bed. A number of patients have needed medical attention. Mr J. B. Discaciati was called to Wellington during the week-end, owing to the serious illness of his sister.

Mr D. Kyle, son of Mr J. Kyle (Maruia), who has been overseas for some time, is expected home shortly. Mrs James Lawn (Reefton) is visiting Mrs J. W. Patterson, Runanga. The Inangahua Silver Band helu a special meeting on Tuesday evening, to consider ways and means of carrying on practices, as a number of key players are affected by the new training programme for the Home Guard. Mr V. Newcombe presided. The secretary (Mr E. Baird) pointed out that with the rearrangement of Home Guard parades it would not be possible for the Band to obtain sufficient attendances at Sunday morning practices. It was a question of coming to a decision which affected the whole future of the Band from a playing viewpoint. If a weeknight practice could not be arranged it seemed as if the Band would have to pack up the instruments and cease playing activities for the duration oi the war, and he felt that this step should not be taken without serious consideration of alternative arrangements.

Mr E. Elliston pointed out the impossibility of arranging Sunday practices. Members had Home Guard responsibilities, which had to be fulfilled, and Band work would have to take second place. He hoped that n would be possible for the Band to carry on.

Mr S. C. Robinson explained the position regarding the new schedule of Home Guard parades, which would affect a number of members.

It was pointed out by members that the town would be without the services of the Band, and no more playing engagements would be accepted unless practices could be carried on and the Band kept together. Several members expressed the hope that tne Band would not be forced to cease playing. Mr H. L. Robinson, bandmaster, moved that the Band meet for practice on Tuesday nights, and that Band business be transacted at the second practice in each month. Seconded by Mt Elliston and carried.
