MARRIAGE LOAN PLAN

PROPOSAL IN AUSTRALIA. SYDNEY, April 23. A system of marriage loans, as a means of increasing the birthrate, was urged at the conference of the Public Service Association in Sydney. The president-elect, Mr. A. J. Tout, suggested that the Government should lend to married couples £lOO, of which £2s’ would be cancelled on the birth of each child. He said that large numbers of Asiatic refugees were now in Australia and many of them would probably remain. “If we wish to survive as„a people we must create population," he declared. “and a solution of the problem lies iu the Government subsidisation of marriage.”
