OVERSEAS SERVICE

APPEALS AT GREYMOUTH. The No. 5A Armed Forces Appeal Board, Messrs H. Lovell (Chairman), G. Manson, and A. Panther, with Mr. C. F. Shapcott as Secretary, reviewed 19 appeals against overseas service at Greymouth, yesterday afternoon. Following ,were the results of the appeals, Horne Guard service being a condition of all cases adjourned: — H. P. Bryan for Townley Bembow Bryan, bee farmer, and a personal appeal by reservist—Dismissed, service obligations postponed for two months. Michael Minehan (Mr. J. W. Hannan) for Michael John Minehan, farmer. —Adjourned for three months for review with an instruction that an endeavour be made to replace one of appellant’s sons on the milk delivery. _ . i John Graham for Joseph Percival Wright, farm labourer.— Adjourned sine die, subject to reservist undergoing three months Territorial training from June 1, to September 1 Frederick Andrew O'Donnell (Mr. C. R. McGinley), a personal appeal on the grounds of undue hardship and public interest. He stated mat he had 93 cattle, including 13 milking cows, 87 pigs, and worked a farm on lease for the Shannahan estate, in addition to his own. Evidence was also sivon by John o ricinnahan, executor in the Shannahan estate.— Adjourned for two months for review. Runanga Co-operative Party (Mi. T Bowes) for Desmond James Piner, apprentice baker.—Adjourned sine die. Thomas R. Smithers for Thomas William Smithers, farm manager. Appellant said he and his son besides working on the farm, cut mining timber for the Wallsend mine, 1.200 bars and props being supplied so far this year.—Adjourned for three months, for review. Stuart and Party (Mr. A. Coppersmith) for lan James Mallett, miner. —Adjourned sine die. Brunner Collieries Ltd. (Mr. E. Lockington) 'for Edward Mansell Tai'ling, miner, who had worked, at the Wallsend mine since June 1930.—

Adjourned sine die. A. H. Chunn (Mr. C. R. McGinley) for Ernest Sefton Topp. farm manager.—Adjourned sine die. Railways Department (Mr. T. Oxenham, sub-foreman, Railway Workshops) for Paul Murray, boilermaker. —Adjourned sine die. The appeal of Butler Bros, sawmi Hers, for Jack Wilfred Peake, accountant, was adjourned for three months for review.

Thomas Coll (Mr. W. D. Taylor) for Peter Thomas Coll, power line constructor. —Adjourned for three months for review. Ambrose Edmund Griffen (Mr. W. D. Taylor), dairy farmer, of Otira—a personal appeal. Reservist said that he was the only dairyman serving Otira (8G customers), and Arthur’s Pass. —Adjourned sine die. Catherine Nicholas (Mr. C. R. McGinley) for Keith Morcane Wheeler, farm hand.—Adjourned sine die. George Cheverton Jacobs (Mr. E. B. E. Taylor) for John Thomson Jacobs, farm hand. —Adjourned sine die, subject to Territorial training between June and September. An appeal by Sotherans Ltd. (Ml - . E. B. E. Taylor) for Thomas Walker, timber labourer, who has left his employment, was withdrawn. Walter Shepherd (Mr. E. B. E. Taylor) for William Shepherd, farm labourer.—Adjourned sine die. George Henry Dalzell (Mr, E. B. E. Taylor), butcher.—Adjourned sine Riversdale Dairy Supplies Ltd., (Mr. E. B. E. Taylor) for Arthur Joseph Carson, truck driver. —Adjourned sine die. Union Steam Ship Company (Mr. 'f„ B. E. Taylor) for Robert William Bari.lev. wharf foreman. The' secretary stated that letters had been received by the Director of National Service from the Timber Controller and the Mining Controller, supporting the appeal. Evidence was given by Mr. o. • . Davis, manager of the Greymoulh office of the Company, detailing the widespread efforts that had been made to replace the reservist without success. . , In reply to Mr. Panther, reservist said he did not consider his job was a routine one. Since he started on the job two years ago the salary had been increased slightly. He agreed that there might be men working on the wharf who would be capable oi doing the job with training. The appeal was adjourned sine die.
