RACING AND TROTTING

MEETINGS TO COME. May 23.—Waikato., May 30.—Wanganui. May 30.—Napier Park. May 30. —Auckland. June 6.—Wanganui. June 6.—Auckland. June 13.—Hawke’s Bay. June 20. —Manawatu. June 27.— Manawatu. June 27. —Dunedin. July 4. —Wellington. July 11— Wellington. July 25.—5. Canterbury Hunt. August I.—Christchurch Hunt. Leading Trainers: The list of leading trainers for the present season is headed by C. S. Donald with 17. Next in order are: V. Alborn 16, F. J. Smith, M. Stewart 14, J. B. Pringle, R. Townley, and T. H. Gunning 13. To Reappear: An interesting entry in the Winter Oats, six furlongs, at the Wanganui meeting is Sir Crusoe, who has not been seen in action for just over twelve months. This son oi Defoe and the Arausio mare Hine Wehi proved himself to be top class.

Riders for Te Rapa: Riding engagements lor the Waikato meeting include’ F. Meynell, Ladv Waimai. Full Hand, General Riske; J. McFarlane, Gay Lally, Marinoto; W. J. Broughton, Gay Rosette; H. N. Gordon, Hogarth: L. C. Brown, Silver Note; R. Caddy, Foxsen, Josette, Flying Cross, Vaalsmoss.

A Long Spell: Not Cut’s breakdown is in a suspensory ligament, and he can be counted out for- some time, if not for good. He was purchased by his present owners, Messrs Turrell and Westenra, early in the season, and soon returned his outlay by winning the Stewards’ Handicap. Since then, however, he has failed to win a race, but was unlucky in some of his engagements.

Unlucky Check: Foxlol’e was travelling like a certain place-getter ana a possible winner nearing the home turn in the champion Hack Plate at Hawera when he suffered a _ severe check through Prince Rewa tiring and coming back on him. This cost Foxlore several lengths at a crucial stage of the race and he did well to recover and finish a close sixth. He is topweight in the hack stayers’ race at Waikato to-morrow.

Big Winners: Winners of over £lOOO in stakes during the present trotting season are as follow: Josedale Grattan £2,285, Burt Scott £2,260. Springfield Globe £2,118. Haughty £ 1.786, Clockwork £ 1,705, Nelson Eddy £1,475, Certissimus £1,450, Pacing Power £1,4371, Uenuku £1,415, Bronze Eagle £ 1,349, Gold Bar £1,265, Great Blaze £1,209. Margin E1.185’, Pleasant Guy £1,125, Fremont £1,075, Te Roto £.1,055, Mah Jong £ 1,035.

Kanin Te Pai: No doubt Kanui Te Pai gains his jumping ability from nis sire, an unnamed son of Cynic, but he is well-bred on his dam’s side, despite the fact that she has not figured in the last two Stud Books. Bourgeoise is by Bourbon 11. who was bred m Australia. by Louis XIII. from imported Felucca, and the darn of Bourgeoise was Merry Tiff, a daughter of Merry Nil', who also produced General Latour, sire of performers who have won good races on the flat, and over the obstacles.

A. E. Ellis for Streamline: G. Ridgway was not able to ride Streamline in the Egmont Steeplechase on Saturday owing to suffering a severe kick in a thigh earlier in the day. Ridgway will not be able to ride again for some time, and Mr. J. H. Grigg immediately secured the services of A. E. Ellis to ride his horse at Te Rapa to-morrow, and at Ellerslie later. Ellis rode Survey to victory in the Great Northern Steeplechase in 1939. C. T. Wilson will also made the trip to Te Rapa and Ellerslie, lie has been engaged to ride Arctic Dawn at Te Ra'pa. as P. Spratt, who is travelling with Ridgway, will not be able io get down to the weight.

WAIKATO RACES. TO-MORROW 'S PROSPECTS. Tiie Waikato races will be held tomorrow, with the win and place system of betting in operation. In view ol the Great Northern meeting at Ellerslie, the form of the horses in the principal events will be watched with interest.
