HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL

monthly’meeting. [our own correspondent.] HOKITIKA, May 30. At the monthly meeting of the Hokitika Borough Council, the Mayor, Mr. A. R. Elcock, presided over the following: Crs. W. H. Stopforth, S. G. Havill, C. Caliari, G. Heinz, E. W. Heenan, and T. W. Duff. A motion of sympathy with Cr. Stuart in the loss of his son was passed, members standing. Receipts were shown at £364/13/1, and expenditure £BOB/17/2. Accounts amounting to £703/10/2 were passed for payment. The Foreman’s and Sexton’s reports were read and approved. The abattoirs report stated: Stock slaughtered for month of April amounted to 22 cows, 31 heifers, 65 bullocks, 313 sheep, 90 lambs, 35 pigs, 15 calves; condemned: 1 sheep. Fees for month amounted to £lO7/11/5. Fees for corresponding month last year, £9t/9/~. Cr. W. H. Stopforth was appointed to represent the E.P.S. on the Selection Committee to deal with allocation of personnel of E.P.S. and Home Guard.

The Mayor was appointed to represent the Hokitika Borough on the Westland Provincial Patriotic Council.

Permission was granted Mrs. F. Preston for the installation of a septic tank, subject to usual conditions. The secretary of the Baths Committee reported on the season. A small credit balance was in hand, although no public carnivals were held. —The Committee were congratulated by the Council. The Town Clerk was authorised to make the necessary arrangements for the use of the baths as an emergency water supply. Complaints regarding cows tethered in the streets had been received, and on the motion of Cr. Havill it was decided to enforce the by-laws and decline to allow stock to be tethered on the street. It was decided to enquire re. purchasing two small sections near the Council's gravel pit at the end of Sale Street, to facilitate the taking of the gravel. The Town Clerk reported that a sum of money was being held in trust for the purchase of land. On the motion of Mr. Heenan it was decided to allocate £l2O of this sum towards the Liberty Loan. The Mayor and Town Clerk were appointed to take whatever action was necessary in connection with the demolition of the old Freemasons’ Hall. It was decided to call tenders for me contract for the removal of nightsoil.

It was decided not to carry out any more tar-sealing until after'the Winter.

CORRESPONDENCE

Mrs. R. Wild and family, acknowledging Council’s expression of sympathy in their bereavement. Medical Officer of Health, stating that in regard to a sample of water taken from the well at the Hokitika Swimming Baths on May 5, 1942, that the Government Analyst had analysed the sample, and the Medical Officer states that the water is satisfactory in every way and could safely be used should it be',required in event of an emergency.

The Medical Officer of Heath, stating that in regard to the proposed sub-division of Church of England Reserve No. 447 adjoining the pumping station reserve, that he could see no reason against the proposal, as the flow of water in this area is away from the pumping station reserve and there was no possible risk of contamination.

Medical Officer of Health forwarding a demolition order in regard to the building erected on section 1474 Revell Street, Hokitika (C.T. 26/252) and lately occupied by Mr. Arthur Jukes.

The secretary West Coast Cinemas, complaining of the damage to carpets, through tar-sealing operations outside the Regent Theatre. —Regret expressed . Miss J. M. Stevenson, hon. sec. Hokitika Beautifying Association, stating that the Association appreciates the work which is being done by the Council in levelling roadside areas, and suggesting that Council arrange to have the long grass cut more frequently, and also McAndrew Square be scythed, raked and sown and further, that the old cricket patch in the centre of Cass Square is a dirty spot and it would be a great improvement if it were returfed.

Ma - . Reg. Cooper, caretaker of the Town Clock, application for increase in remuneration. —No action taken. Mr. F. H. Martin, stating that through labour shortage he had transferred his contract for the removal of offal from the Hokitika Abattoirs, to Mr. Fred J. Andrews, butcher, and Mr. Andrews had agreed to take over and perform the existing contract. — Approved. Mr. R. A. Detlaff, complaining that access to the beach through the intersection of Park and Revell Street has been blocked by the building of a garage adjoining section 3264.—N0 action taken.

Mr. S. J. Preston, asking for refund of money donated for repainting the Town Hall, which the Council was not prepared to carry out in its present state. —Councillors expressed the opinion that the public wanted a new Town Hall when possible, and would object to any expenditure on the old one.
