OVERSEAS SERVICE

APPEALS REVIEWED. The Armed Forces Appeal Board, Messrs H. Lovell (Chairman), G. Manson, and A. Panther, with Mr. C. F. Shapcott as Secretary, is reviewing appeals against overseas service at Greymouth today, 80 cases being set down. Lieutenant G. Howes watched proceedings on behalf of the Army. t . The following cases were heard before the “Star” went to Press, evidence being given on the lines of that at the previous hearing, and already reported (in all cases of adjournments Home Guard service was directed): — P. Smith, senr. (Mr. T. E. Coates) lor Preston Ralph Smith, farmer, and a personal appeal by reservist.— Adjourned sine die. William Thomas Begg (Mr. T. E. Coates) for Wilford James Eegg, farm hand.—Adjourned sirie die. Mrs. Christiana Passmore appealed for Passmore Stewart, farmer, and reservist also made a personal appeal. —Adjourned sine die. Mary T. Shaffrey (Mr. W. D. Taylor) for John Kevin Shaffrey, farmer.—Adjourned sine die. George Leopold Burger (Mr. W. D. Taylor), grocer.—Dismissed, service obligations postponed for two months. H. E. Hodgkinson (Mr. A. M. Jamieson) for Keith Maxwell Hodgkinson, dairy farmer.—Adjourned sine die, subject to reservist doing -three months Territorial .training during June, July, and August. The Public Works Department (Mr E. F. Evans, District Engineer) for Wilfred John Champion, launchman. —Adjourned sine die. The Public Works Department (Mr. A. E. Davenport, District Electrical Engineer), lor Gerald Langford Symes, electrician, Robert P. MartinLevorson, linesman, and James Alexander Mitchell, operator fitter. —The appeals in. regard to Symes and Martin-Levorson were adjourned sine die (no Home Guard), and the appeal in regard to Mitchell was dismissed, service obligations being postponed until June 30. ((It was stated that a replacement had been secured for Mitchell). The Post and Telegraph Department (Mr. A. W. Swap) for William Keith Faulkner, postmaster and wireless operator at Jackson’s Bay.—Adjourned sine die. The Railways Department (Mr. G. H. McLean. District Traffic Manager) for Allen Thomas Hunt, Cecil Edward Hamill, Edward Henry J. Burgess. Percy James Reid, porters.—Adjourned sine die.

An appeal for Norman Waterman, fireman and docker, was withdrawn. An appeal by K. M. Higgins and Coy. for K. M. Higgins, mill manager, on the ground of public interest and a personal appeal by the reservist on the same grounds, were adjourned sine die. An appeal on the ground of undue hardship was dismissed, and a personal appeal on the grounds ol conscience was withdrawn.. The case was adjourned from Hokitika.
