SAWMILL IDLED

DAMAGE AT BRUCE BAY.

As a result of an extensive slip during the boisterous weather towards the end of last week, the sawmill operated by Bruce Bay Timbers Ltd., at Bruce Bay has been idled, and though the full extent of the damage is not yet known, it will probably be a month or two before the mill resumes cutting. The mill has been cutting approximately 150,000 superficial feet of timber, mostly white pine, per month, and, with the present urgent demand for timber, the loss of the mill’s cutting capacity is SeriOUS. r. 11* The storm, which swept South Westland, is stated to have been the most serious in recent years, and considerable damage, by way of scouring, was also done to the highway. The road, however, at least as far as Mahitahi, is now open. . The slip, estimated to contain thousands of tons of debris, came down from Flagstaff Hill into Flagstaff Creek, and carried away the dam and the power house, which supplies the mill with power, and the township with light. The power plant is broken and twisted in the midst of the other debris. As the plant supplied the power for the mill, the bush, and the loading winches, even the timber which has been cut cannot be loaded, until some other supply is obtained. Five chains of the Company’s' bridge over the river have also been carried away. The rainfall at Greymouth for the 24 hours up to 9 a.m., to-day was 105 points, of which 75 points fell before 1 p.m., but the steady fall ceased early last evening. However, another slip, the fourth in six weeks, came down on the Greymouth-West-port coastal road, at the Twelve Mile, shortly after noon yesterday, effectively blocking all traffic, but it was expected that the road would be negotiable this afternoon. There was also a slip at Sandy Creek, about half a mile on the Greymouth side of the other slip, and this also should be cleared this afternoon.

No other damage has been reported in the Grey Council or Greymouth Public Works districts, as a result of yesterday’s rain.
