From her home on the Auckland waterfront a mother waved a white cloth in the hope that her affectionate signal would be observed by her departing son. Much to her surprise, a high-powered car drew up at her gate and four officials alighted. She was under the painful necessity of convincing them that she had not been signalling to shipping on the harbour.
