FLOODS IN QUEENSLAND

DISASTROUS CONSEQUENCES

BRISBANE, Feb. 15

Five persons have been drowned and fears are entertained for the safety of many others in floods along the Burnett River in Queensland over a distance of 200 miles. More than 2000 people are homeless, thousands of cattle have been drowned, and large tracts of cane crops have been, destroyed. The damage is estimated at £1,000,000. At Bundaberg, where the river rose nearly 32 feet, all the wharf sheds and 6000 tons of stored sugar were swept away. The water rose to the second floor of a hotel at south Bundaberg. Airmen from a training school assisted the police and civilians in the work of rescuing people who were marooned. One airman was drowned and another is believed drowned. The floods are now subsiding rapidly.
