‘j MONTHLY MEETING. " [OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] - January 20. e Tne Hokitika Borough Council met ‘ last evening, the Mayor (Mr G. A. 1 Perry) presiding. The following . members were present:—Crs. G. 1 Heinz, G. Havill, A. R. Elcock, T. V/. > Duff, E. ML Heenan, C. Caliari. 1 The Treasurer’s statement showed " receipts £5lO/16/-, expenditure ’ £1384/4/2. Accounts amounting to £1043/6/9 were passed for paymerit. Abattoir report: Stock slaughtered ' for the month of December amounted 1 to 12 cows, 10 heifers, 68 bullocks, - 311 sheep, 229 lambs, 27 pigs, — ' calves. Condemned, nil. Fees col--1 lected for the month amounted to > £93/0/9; fees for the corresponding 1 month last year £B4/12/6. It was decided to call applications - for the position of labourer-lorry 3 driver. - The forman’s and sexton’s reports : were read and approved. Satisfaction was expressed at the ■ manner in which the arrangements - were made and carried out for the ’ visit of the Governor-General and Lady Newall. C. P. Duncan applied to transfer lease No. 3344 Municipal Reserve No. 486, Sewell Street, Hokitika, to C. R. • Eastgate.—Approved. . Greymouth Motors Ltd. advised i that they would not re-license one of the kerbside pumps at their garage ! in Hampden Street, as arrangements i had been made for the Government to use the pump.—Approved. ; The Westland County Council ap- ' proved of the proposal for culverting and side drain at the bridge alongside the tourists’ cottage. Miss L. A. Keller stated that she is making a lawn outside her residence in Hall Street, and asked for four ioaas of sand. —Agreed to. The Westland County Council forwarded a statement of expenditure of the Hokitika aerodrome for the past six months, the net expenditure being £lO3/0/9 and the Council’s proportion is £5l/10/4. —Clerk lo report. Mrs R. Huxford, north Revell Street, Hokitika, wrote asking whether the Council will reconsider its decision and take the necessary steps to grant titles to the owners ol houses which have been erected on the west side of north Revell Street road reserve. —Council could see no reason to change decision.

Mr W. H. Nichol wrote asking that holes and irregularities in the surface of the bitumen along the frontage of nis property next to tne Regent Theatre receive attention, and the further point is that the camber is not sufficient to prevent the water lying along the shop frontage.- —Referred to Works Committee. Mr K. W. Reece wrote asking that the footpath in front of his new shop in Weld Street (alongside Mr Nichol’s) be raised to conform with the levels on either side, as he is having a glass substance (vitrolite) front put on the base of the building and asking that the work be done as soon as possible in order that he can procure the exact measurements required to lit the base vitrolite. — Referred to Works Committee. The branch manager, State Advances Corporation, Nelson, wrote, stating that Mr M. E. Mac Gifford, who is occupying one of the State rental houses in Stafford Street, has made an urgent request to have the section drained, and a similar request has been received from the adjoining tenant. It is considered that a properly termed channel should be established on the public highway for the purpose of carrying away the surplus water, as the present watertable is not deep enough to permit of these sections being draiihed. —‘Referred to Works Committee, to report.

The District Agent, Social Security Department, advised that the extension of subsidy for Scheme 13 had been extended for a period of 13 weeks, commencing on January 12, 1942. with an additional commitment of £2OB subsidy. Mr James Kerr advised that since leaving Hokitika on his holidays he has had to consult two doctors, who have advised at least three months’ treatment.
