HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING. { [our own correspondent.] HOKITIKA, September 16. The Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry) presided at the monthly meeting of the Hokitika Borough Council last evening. Present: Crs. W. H. Stopforth, C. Caliari, D. P. Stuart, E. W. Heenan, A. R. Elcock, G. Heinz, J. G. Havill. and T. W. Duff. The Treasurer’s statement was as follows:—Receiots £3115/19/1, expenditure £1035/17/2. ■ Accounts amounting to £Bl3/8/6 were passed for payment. The Abattoir report: Stock slaughtered for month of August amounted to 13 cows, 29 heifers, 64 bullocks, 192 sheep, 1 lamb, 14 pigs, 3 calves; condemned, 1 cow. Fees collected for month amounted to £56/12/6, compared with £5B/17/6 for the corresponding month last year. The Council approved of the erection of a matron’s residence at the Westland Hospital, as proposed by the Hospital Board, and of its share of the cost. Authority was given the Town Clerk to employ an assistant to relieve Mr Parham while on sick leave. It was resolved, owing to the height, the no parking signs must be kept in Revell Street (9ft), that the notices be also painted on the street surface. The Hokitika Beautifying Association wrote suggesting that the paths leading to the Municipal Baths and those in the triangle itself be tarsealed, also expressing appreciation of the way in which the borough foreman and staff are improving the roadside verges by removing the high spots and filling in depressions. W. Connors, slaughterman, applied for 14 days’ annual leave from October 20.—Granted.

The Director of National Service Department wrote forwarding a copy of Motor Vehicles Impressment Emergency Regulations, 1941. The district will be known as the Greymouth Vehicle District, with headquarters at Greymouth. This area will comprise the Counties of Inanoughs of Greymouth, Runahga, Brunner, Kumara, Hokitika and Ross. It is desired that the E.P.S. Organisation in each district submit three names from which the Minister will appoint to the Advisory Committee one E.P.S. representative. The persons nominated should be readily available to district headquarters, where the Advisory Committee will meet and should have some knowledge of motor vehicles and of E.P.S. transport requirements.—Mi' G. H. Chapman was nominated. The Hokitika Businessmen’s Association wrote asking the Council to support the Association’s suggestion that the reconnaissance squadron of. the Royal New Zealand Air Force might be stationed at Hokitika as all the facilities are already here. —No action taken.

Mr A. R. Wright wrote asking that the road formation in Rollcston Street north of Park Street be extended to section 1504, as it is his intention to erect a- dwelling there at an early date, and also that the surface drain along the frontage be deepened.—Referred to Works Committee.

Mr W. Campbell, Fitzherbert Street, wrote asking that the drain on the east side of Fitzherbert Street, from Hampden Street, to his property receive attention, as in its present condition the dram is unable to cope with the surface water and scours the footpath along the frontage —Referred to Works Committee.

Samuel George Veale, Sale Street, applied to surrender lease 2272 in respect of Municipal Reserve No. 539 and to be granted a new lease under section 5 (e) of the Public Bodies Leases Act, 1908, for the balance of the unexpired term of the original lease at a rental of 5 per cent, of the present unimproved value of the land. Such new lease to be granted in accordance with the provisions of the first schedule of the aforesaid Act.— Granted. The Sanitary Inspector wrote asking that the owner or occupier of Section 1474 (Valuation 834) be required to effect repairs to dwelling as stated in the notice.—No action. The Sanitary Inspector asked that the legal representative be required to effect repairs to the dwelling on section 22 and 54 (Valuation 14) in accordance with the notice. —Town Clerk to take action. Park, Murdoch and James, solicitors, applying for permission to subdivide section in Weld Street for Mr K. W. Reese.—Granted. Seaview Rugby League, applying for permission to use Cass Square on September 27 and to charge for same. —No objection.
