j MONTHLY MEETING. I ; [our own correspondent.] j HOKITIKA, July 22. I The Hokitika Borough Council met | last evening. The Mayor (Mr. G. A. Perry) presided over "the following ■ members: Crs. A. R. Elcock, J. Fox, E.' W. Heenan, C. Caliari, G. Havill, D. j P. Stuart and T. W. Duff. ' The tender of the “Guardian and Times” Coy. for the printing of the; Borough balance sheet was accepted, i The Town Clerk was authorised to ■ make arrangements for a caretaker ■ for the town clock. The Town Clerk ■ was also authorised to arrange with . Mr. F. Chesterman (ex-overseer) to act as supervisor of the shifting of the water pipe-line across the Kan- , ieri Dredging Company’s mining area, j It was decided to ask for a confer- - ence with the County Council, with a view to asking the Government to take over the south side aerodrome. Crs. Elcock, Heenan, Duff and the Mayor will represent the Borough Council. , I The treasurer’s statement showed: Receipts £ 1280/9/6, expenditure £1305/2/9. Accounts amounting to £1026/9/8 were passed for payment. The Town Clerk was authorised to strike the annual rate, totalling 2/2 in the £ on the unimproved value. This included 6d loans repayment, 9d ordinary rate and 9d Hospital rate, and Harbour Board rate af 2d in the £, also 22/- per pan was fixed as a sanitary rate. An account was rendered to the Council, by Kanieri Electric Ltd., for damages caused to their power-line by a branch of a tree blown across by a storm.—On legal advice, the Council denied liability. A report submitted by Cr. Stopforth recommending the piping of several drains which were in need of attention, was adopted. The Foreman’s and Sexton’s reports were adopted. On the motion of Cr. E. W. Heenan it was decided to increase the subsidy to the Public Library by £63 for the year, to enable the Library Commit- ■ iee to avail itself of the benefits of the Government free library service. If the service proves unsatisfactory after a year’s trial the extra subsidy would be discontinued. The Abattoirs report stated: Stock slaughtered for month of June amounted to 16 cows, 37 heifers, 74 bullocks, 326 sheep, 3 lambs, 34 pigs, 10 calves. Condemned, one heifer, one bullock, one sheep. Fees collected for the month amounted to £79 3/6, as compared with fees for corresponding month last year, £77/11/-. CORRESPONDENCE From the Kanieri Electric Limited advising that with the authority of the Local Lighting Controller the current of the street lighting system has been increased from 3.75 amps to 4g amps commencing on May 27, 1941, and then from 4| amps to 5 amps commencing on July 8, 1941. The normal current for the street lamps is 6.6 amps. The present shades over the lamps have also been bevelled bacx for two inches on the side away from the sea and that his work is now in hand. —Acceptable. The Camp Commandant, Burnham Military Camp, stating that a heavy planting programme is being initiated at the camp in order to improve the surroundings, asking if the Council have any spare stock in its nursery, viz., forest trees, shrubs, herbaceous or rock plants, a donation would be carefully used and very greatly appreciated. Any packages should be sent to the Camp Commandant, Burn - ham Camp, Burnham, carriage forward. —None available. The Adjutant, Home Guard, acknowledging with thanks the Council’s advice that it had set aside the amount of £5O to cover expenses incurred by the Hokitika Home Guard during the current financial year and stating that it is not possible at this stage to intimate the limits which the i Government proposes to the adminisi trative expenses but as soon as the capitation grants have been made by the National Service Department, no doubt the Dominion Headquarters will take steps to clarify the position. l.ie N.Z. Refrigerating Co. advising that the following quantities of meat were delivered into the Hokitika Abattoir area, viz. during the month of May, 1941 10 sheep, during the month of June, 1941, 51 sheep. Mr. Colin Ross stating that the footpath in Fitzherbert Street, on the east side, and close to Weld Street is an old creek bed which runs through the section. The level of the footpath and of his section has fallen and he asks that the level of the footpath he raisedd six inches or more as he is altering his Fitzherbert Street frontage. Applicant also points out that in wet weather a miniature lake, exists on the railway side of the road opposite <

his premises and there appears to be no escape for the water. —Referred I to Works Committee. I Ross and Burt Ltd. asking to have I the footpath repaired at the corner or Weld and Sewell Streets at the approaches of their corner runway.— Left to Works Committee. I Messrs E. J. King and A. R. Broome I pointing out that the open drain along ' the frontage of their properties in ! Stafford Street, a distance of about 3 I chains, serves no purpose, except per- ! haps for surface water and asking ; that the drain be piped and filled m i as they wish to improve the frontages I of their properties. The applicants are i prepared to assist with the labour rej quired in filling in the drain.—Rei ferred to Works Committee to report. 1 Mr. James Duncan advising that he i is removing the faulty balcony at the i shop owned bv the estate of J. J. Breeze, and asking permission to I erect a post verandah in lieu of the balcony.—Approved. Mrs. J. M. Whitford, Dalton Street, application for permission to install a septic tank on section 1331/2. —Approved subject to Health Department. Mr. E. T. Sherriff asking for a reduction in the rental of north part of M.R. 446, from £2O per annum to £l3 110/- per annum and that a renewal i be granted for ten years from July 18, 11941 at the reduced rental. Applicant j points out that so far he has spent approximately £7B in improvements and there is still about three acres jwhich is useless.until it is cultivated, i —Agreed. Mr. Robert Lynn, Auckland tender- ’ ing his resignation as caretaker of the | Town Clock to date from June 21, 11941, inclusive, and Mr. R. J. Cooper I undertaking to look after the clock : from the same date and at the present rate of pay until the Council make arrangements for a successor to Mr. Lynn.—Agreed. Manager, Kanieri Gold Dredging Co. Ltd., Greymouth forwarding a plan of proposed new 6in. water mains through their dredging area, which the Company are installing in place of the Council’s 6in water mains and also forwarding certificate from the Hume Steel Ltd. that the new 6in. pipes have been subjected to hydraulic pressure exceeding 300 pounds per sq. inch and at this pressure there was no trace of faults of any description.—Supervisor to be appoint- • ed. The Clerk of the Westland County Council advising that the license for the Hokitika Aerodrome expires at the end of this month and it is being renewed and further that the Public Works has asked that all stock be removed from the aerodrome and the landing ground be kept clear of all depasturing animals and also to fill in such portions of the ground that have subsided causing pools of water to accumulate in wet weather and that this latter work is being undertaken chiefly with scheme 13 labour. Reverend J. Finnerty, Hokitika, submitting plans and specifications for the new parish school in Sewell Street for the Council to grant a permit for the work.—Recommended. The Secretary, Westland Hospital Board advising that there has been an adjustment of the Council’s proportion of the hospital levy tor the year ending March 31, 1942. The Department of Health have increased the maintenance levy by £B4/10/3, while the maintenance subsidy has been reduced by a similar amount. The addition increases the Council’s levy by £3O/10/6, making a total levy of £2803/15/4. ■ R. S. Huxford and six other petitioners residing on the road reserve on the west side of North Revell Street objecting to paying the Extraordinary Water Fee and asking to be brought into the Borough.—No action taken. Mrs. Jesse V. Cooper, Davie Street, application for formation of Street drain to Stafford Street. —Referred to Works Committee to report.
