BEEF PRICES RISE CHRISTCHURCH, July 17. The prices of most classes of stock p again rose at yesterday’s Addington ' market, due to small entries and Winter weather. Fat sheep were dearer p by up to 2/- a head and fat cattle r of best quality by about 3/- per 1001 b. 1 Store sheep: The sale was the best t for this season, although there was a larger entry of 1720 head. Ewes f were up by 1/- to 1/6 on last week,s but lambs were not dearer, though they were firm. Top price for ewes 1 in lamb was 27/-. ~ Fat lambs: Most of the entry of 250 head was of indifferent quality but for anything of weight and finish there was a free demand from butchers, values being quite up to those of - last week. Fat sheep: Under spirited com- , petition values were 1/- to 1/6 a head better than last week and the sale i was good for all classes. Values were: • Extra prime wethers, to 37/10. Prime 1 heavy wethers, 32/- to 34/6. Prime ? medium-weight wethers, 29/6 to 32/-. Ordinary wethers, 26/6 to 29/-. Light ' wethers, to 26/-. Extra prime ewes, ’ to 30/10. Prime ewes, 25/- to 27/6. : Medium ewes, 21/- to 24/6. Light ' ewes, to 20/6. Fat cattle: The sale for 517 head 1 was the best of the season. The market for prime cattle opened at a sharp advance on last week’s better rates, ’ the improvement being up to 25/- a ’ head. Prime steers ranged from 41/to 44/- per 1001 b, with selected young ■ pens to 45/-,-medium to good 37/- to 40/- and inferior down to 30/-. A pen of eight from the Te Kinga Land and Timber Company averaged £l7/5/-. Values were:—Extra prime heavy steers, to £2O/12/6. Prime heavy steers, £l6/5/- to £l7/15/-. Prime medium-weight steers, £l4/10/- to £l6. Ordinary steers, £ll to £l3/15/-. Light steers, to £lO/15/-. Extra prime heifers, to £l4/12/6. Prime heifers, £lO/15/-to £l2/15/-. Medium heifers, £B/5/- to £lO/5/-. Light heifers, to £7/10/-. Extra prime cows, to £l4/12/6. Prime cows, £9 to £ll. Medium cows, £6/15/to £B/10/-. Light cows, to £6/5/-. Store cattle: The sale was much the ‘.freest of the season, and the keenness of the ..demand for the heifers indicated the general scarcity of young breeding stock. Vealers: Another small entry met with a sound sale, Jast week’s prices being fully maintained. ; Dairy cattle: Some good cows were included in the entry of 90 head and met with a good demand, but gener- ,
ally the sale was much easier. Best second and third calvers made to £l6/10/-, second, third and fourth calvers made £B/10/-, to £ll and others £5 to £7/10/-. Best heifers made to £l3, good heifers £9 to £ll, and others £5 to £B/10/-. Fat ’ pigs: Values showed little change, being as ’ follow: —Porkers, 38/6 to 45/6. Medium porkers, 51/6 to 59/6. Heavy porkers, £3/0/6 to £3/6/6. Average price per lb 8d to 9d. Choppers, 58/6 to £6/18/6. Light baconers, £3/5/6 to £3/14/6. Medium baconers, £3/18/6 to £4/4/6. Heavy baconers, £4/7/6 to £4/12/6. Extra heavy baconers, £4/15/6 to £5/5/-. Average price per lb, 63d to 7|d. Store pigs: There was a good sale, except for weaners and small sorts which eased. • Values were:—Small weaners, 10/- to 12/-. Medium wean-
