BROKEN HILL WORKS
GOVT. CONTROL ADVOCATED SYDNEY,’ July 16. After a meeting of the War Council in Sydney to-day, a demand was made by the Labour Members of the Council that the Commonwealth Government should assume the control . of the Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited, in the interests of the nation, thus giving justice to the workers engaged in the industry. The spokesman was the Deputy Leader of the Federal Labour Party, Mr. F. M. Forde who argued that the control of that Company would help to provide the raw materials for the war at a minimum price. He and his colleagues believed that action of this kind would allay the growing feeling of suspicion that certain huge monopolistic key industries were becoming affluent at this time when the soldiers and the masses of the people were making great sacrifices. Mr. Forde pointed out that both the British and the United States Governments have found it necessary to take oyer and to control for the duration of the war the large key industries, and this with considerable advantage to the industrial peace, increased output, and the war effort generally.
