RACING AND TROTTING MEETINGS TO COME July 19— Manawatu. July 19—Waimate. July 26—South Canterbury. July 26—Rangitikei. August 2 —Christchurch. August 12, 14, 16 —Canterbury. August 23 —Pakuranga. August 28 —Egmont-Wanganui. August 30 —Taranaki. Masterly Display: Erinaiion, trained lor his new owner, Mrs A. W. McDonald, at Awapuni, jumped the country on the new steeplechase course last week, and gave a masterly display. He is stated to have brightened up considerably in the past few weeks. Searchinn Trials: Chat has been getting through plenty of solid work at Awapuni, and seemingly Mr C. T. Th orburn has reconsidered his decision to turn her out until next season. Last week she had two searching trials over the country, and jumped with her usual brilliance, and pulled up well. Broadcast Fees: An interesting point in connection with racing and trotting activities in the Dominion is that no fees are received by clubs for the right to broadcast from their courses. The National Broadcasting Service pays £l5OO per annum for the privilege, but the amount goes into the general funds of the two conferences—£9oo to the Racing Conference, and £6OO to the Trotting Conference. A Bad Rule: An utter lack of consideration for riders and horses will continue by the defeat of the proposal that the time for orderinghorses to the post be reduced to 10 minutes (says “Sentinel” ,in the “’Otago Daily Times”). Under existing conditions horses enter the birdcage about 25 minutes before starting time and go to the post 20 minutes before lining up at the barrier. New Zealand is the only country in the world where the totalisator is considered of more importance than the riders and horses. The bulk of the betting is done in the last kve minutes before the Held lines up at the post.
