RESERVIST’S DEATH CHRISTCHURCH, July 13. John Henry Knowles, a polish manufacturer, married, aged .>l, oi 171 River Road, collapsed and died while he was on manoeuvres with the National Military Reserve at Scarborough Hill, Sumner, to-day. It was reported to the police that Knowles was in a unit which had been walking uphill about mid-day. A halt was called, and soon, afterwards Knowles collapsed. He died five minutes later. Earlier he had complained to another man that he was short 01. breath. TAXI-DRIVER - ATTACKED. CHRISTCHURCH, July 12. William Edward Dron, a taxidriver, of Cashel Street, reported to the police on Friday night that he hact been attacked and injured at Ladbrooks by a passenger he was taking to Tai Tapu. He had an injury to his head and was admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital, but his condition is not serious. Dron told the police that he had one passenger at the time, a man. He was not sure exactly how the attack haa been made, and the man had got away. No money was taken from him. FARMHOUSE ON FIRE HASTINGS, July 12. Fire completely destroyed a dwelling and contents on the farm property of Mr. J. M. Cameron, a race-horse-owner, at Te Mahanga, about o’clock yesterday, afternoon. There being no water, it was impossible to suppress the outbreak, which had a good hold when noticed. Mr. Cameron who lives in Hastings, was out on the property yesterday, and was engaged in breaking' in a horse some distance from the building, when he saw a thick pall of smoke breaking through the roof. By the time he and an assistant could reach the house it was burning fiercely. None of the outbuildings was damaged. Mr. Cameron held an insurance cover on the building, but the furniture and effects were not insured.
