Jumping perfectly all the way, National Debt won the Grand National Steeplechase at Flemington today. The police are investigating the doping of the favourite, Cheery Jack, who was scratched after the veterinary steward reported that the horse was unfit to race. The chairman of the Victoria Racing Club, Sir Allan Currie, has given orders that no expense is to be spared to track down the culprits. Results:— Grand National Steeplechase, of £2500; about three miles and a furlong.—National Debt 10.10 (Kenny) i; Brightello 2; Sachem 3. A length and a-half; four lengths. Time, 6.61. July Handicap, about one mile.— Con Maru 7.9 (Williamson) 1; Grandson 2; Orcadian 3. A length. Time, 1.40.

Lord Valentine, with reversal of form, won the Doomben Cup. He ran 11 furlongs in 2.151, a quarter of a second faster than Beaulivre’s record established in the race last year. Lord Valentine made a great finishing run and won going away. The favourite, Gold Salute, was prominent early, but petered out in the last three furlongs and finished eighth.
