RAID CHILDREN SHOCK-FREE

FEW HAVE TO LEAVE LONDON. LONDON, February 5. The remarkable way in which children stand air raids is shown by the fact that so far only a dozen have been reported to the London County Council for evacuation because their health, bodily or mental, has been a fleeted. In one case the parents _ have agreed to let the child go, and in the others the final medical report is still awaited. The order for compulsory evacuation of war-sick children under 14 in Greater London was made by Mr Malcolm MacDonald, the Minister of Health, on January 16. Any responsible person, such as a shelter warden, a teacher, or a school attendance officer, may report that a child has been affected by bombing. The child is then medically examined and, if the doctor recommends evacuation, the parents are approached, and persuasive measures first tried. Children will be sent first to “rest centres" for observation and afterwards to ; the type of home, camp, hostel or billet that seems most suitable.

“We have been pleasantly surprised by the way children have reacted to bombing,” said a woman official of the Mental Health Emergency Committee, which is investigating conditions of shelter life. “Our impression is that air raids have much less effect on the child’s mentality than might be supposed. “A great deal depends on the conduct and bearing of their parents. It is, however, early to generalise, for in some cases there may be effects in later life not apparent at the time. A certain number of children appear to be suffering from forms of physical and mental illness owing to the upsetting of their normal routine.”
