HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING. [our own correspondent.] HOKITIKA, May 20. The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening; present: The Mayor (Mr. G. A. Perry), Crs. W. H. Stopi'orth, A. R. Elcock, G. Heinz, J. Fox, E. W. Heenan, G. Havill, C. Caliari, L. W. Duff and D. P. Stuart. The Mayor welcomed the new members, Crs. Havill and Heenan. Pleasure was expressed at the recovery of the Mayor after his illness. The financial statement showed:— Receipts £232/2/11, expenditure £765/5/8. Accounts amounting to £5Bl/0/1 were passed for payment. The Town Clerk was authorised to make the necessary arrangements for a bank overdraft of £3,500. The abattoirs report stated: Stock slaughtered for May amounted to 27 cows, 32 heifers, 79 bullocks, 357 .sheep, 102 lambs, 34 pigs, 3 calves. Fees collected for month amounted to £9l 9/-, as compared with £lOl/5/6 for the corresponding month last year. The Town Clerk’s report on the proposed amended Abattoirs Bylaws was approved. It was resolved to apply to the High School Board of Governors for a 21years lease with a perpetual right of renewal for the site of the Municipal Baths and approaches. It was decided to cut back the bank at the approach to the cemetery, the spoil to be used in the formation of a new road in the cemetery. The sexton’s quarterly report was read and approved and a requisition for material for a shed at his residence was granted. On the motion of the Mayor, a committee consisting of himself, Crs. Stopi'orth and Heenan was set up to go into the question of a new Town Hall, its plans and costs.

In connection with the enquiry into the suggested change in the Public Library system, Crs. Heenan and Caliari were appointed to meet the Library Committee. The election of committees resulted: —Finance, full Committee; Abattoirs, Crs. Fox (chairman)' and Havill; Public Works, Crs. Caliari (chairman), Heinz, Stuart and Havill; Reserves, Crs. Stopforth (chairman), Heenan, Fox and Duff; Rates and Bylaws, Crs. Elcock (chairman), Stuart, Caliari and Stopforth; Library, Crs. Duff (chairman), Heenan and Caliari. It was decided to reduce the number of members on the Library Committee to six, three Council and three subscribers’ representatives. Deputy Mayor, Cr. A. R. N.Z. Refrigerating Co., advising (hat the following quantities of meat were delivered into the Hokitika abbatoir district during the month of April; 9 sheep and 3 lambs. Department of Internal Affairs, notifying that under Section 11 of the Fire Brigades’ Amendment Act, 1932, the biennial election of members of all lire brigades is required to be held in the month of May, and that it is necessary for the Council io elect two of these members as representatives on the Hokitika Fire Board,-' during this month.—Messrs Elcock and J. J. Mclntosh appointed.

Mr. C. Anderson, assistant slaughterman, application for 12 days’ annual leave, having completed one year’s service.—Granted. Stationmaster, Hokitika,--notifying that Railway House No. 628, Hampden Street, formerly occupied by the bus manager of the road service, is now occupied by the stationmaster. Messrs E. R. Browne and J. S. Diedrichs, notifying that they ha ;, e purchaseci Section 1502, 1503, Rolleston Street, and asking for extension of road for a distance of two chains, and also water supply to these sections. —Referred to Works Committee.'

Messrs W. J. Millner and W. C. Koch, asking that the footpath on the east side of Fitzherbert Street, between Park and Tudor Streets, bo formed to provide reasonable access to their residences, and pointing out that the absence of a footpath makes it extremely dangerous for both chil - dren and adults having to cross the main highway in the middle ol a block.—Referred to Works Committee to report. Mr. R. Mackley, application tor permission to connect a sanitary convenience to be erected on Section 3340/1, Hampden Street, to the closed drain on the north side of Hampden Street, between the railway yard and Sewell Street.—Referred to Health Officer. Mr. E. Howat, application for domestic water ■ supply to Section 1016/17, Hoffman Street, between Weld Street and Hampden StreetGranted. Mrs. A. North, Harbour Board reserve, application for domestic water supply.—Granted. The District Engineer, Post and Telegraph Department, stating that, in regard to the public telephone box in Stafford Street, near Davie Street, further consideration has led to the decision that the box would be better situated if placed just around the corner, in Davie Street, approximately 15 feet from the Stafford Street building line. The box would be erected" close to the future kerbhne, which it is understood would be 13 feet from the building line. This situation would be drier, and would not interfere with the visibility ol ■traffic approaching the corner—No objection. . 4 P. C. Davie drawing attention to the unsatisfactory condition of Davie Street along the frontage of his residence, (State House) which is probably due to the water table not bejng graded correctly, and also that sufficient gravel be placed at his frontage.—Referred to overseer.
