KUMARA NOTES

[OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] A meeting of the Kumara Borough Council was held on Thursday evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr. A. B. Spiers), Crs. Little, Murphy, W/se, Lawrence, Pamment and McLean. The Borough Foreman was instructed to proceed with the erection of a shed for thjp borough lorry. The Town Clerk was instructed to warn people who dumped rubbish near the town on the Zig Zag road, that this was not allowed, and if this warning did not have effect, to prosecute offenders.

Cr. Muyphy, chairman of Pub"lic Works, : reported that the streets had how practically all'been cleaned up. and sheds and buildings on the recreation ground had been cleaned, and repaired. He also recommended that the Council try to procure the grader to grade the road from the town to the Teremakau traffic bridge. —lt was left to the Town Clerk to arrange with the Public Works Engineer for use of same. Cr Lawrence thought it would be a good idea if the Borough lorry made a fortnightly collection of rubbish, and residents could be asked to leave tins where the lorry could con - veniently collect same. The Mayor said as this was the last meeting of the old Council, he wished to thank councillors for their courtesy and help over the. past two years, and that though much remained to be done, they had made definite progress, mentioning the tarsealing of Main Street. On Anzac Day, the R.S.A., Home Guard, piembers of St. John Ambulance, and the children of both schools marched from the Post Office to the Memorial Hall, when several speakers made addresses. Mr. Thwaites, in his address, appealed to the people to keep up heart, for the course of justice

for which we were fighting, would prevail in the end. The Mayor placed a wreath on the Cenotaph, and Mr? Birss placed one on behalf of the R.S.A. The members of the R.S.A. then visited the cemetery, and left poppies on the graves of deceased nurses and soldiers.
