RACING AT REEFTON. FERRIBY AND METRIC SUCCEED

The Easter racing circuit on the West Coast concluded on Saturday, when the Reefton Jockey Club held a highly successful- meeting on the Reefton racecourse. The weather was fine, the track in first class order, and there was a large attendance. Handy-sized fields encouraged speculation, and the £5,964 handled represented an increase of £1,359 on the £4,605 handled at the Club’s Autumn fixture last year. The racing was good throughout the day, with some fine finishes, and was efficiently conducted by the committee. There was a most unfortunate incident in the Flying Hack Handicap, in which the favourite, Citizen, who carried nearly one-third of the totalisator investments, and Miltiades, were left at the post, and took no part in the race. There was a long delay at the barrier, mainly through the fractiousness of Miltiades, and Amount, and after the barrier was broken twice, there was a false start. The field was then despatched by the starter, Mr. G. Reed, without a barrier or a, flag, and Citizen and Miltiades did not* leave the post. It is understood that the starter decided to get the field away without the barrier, because there had already been a long delay, and because the tape had been broken in so many places that repair would have meant another delay of several minutes. The starter told the horsemen that he would not use a barrier, but apparently not all of them heard him say so, among them A. Stokes, who was on Citizen. Other riders in the race, however, averred that the starter said he was going to start the field without the barrier. The irony of the situation was that Citizen had not caused the slightest trouble. The Judicial Committee later met to consider the matter. They expressed dissatisfaction with the start, and instructed the starter that in future, in similar circumstances, he must use a flag. There was no cause for dissatisfaction with the other despatches made by Mr. Reed during the afternoon.

An inquiry was instituted by the Stipendiary Steward, Mr. C. F. Hartland, into the running of Karu, under the rule dealing with inconsistent running, after that horse had won the Reefton Trot, of a mile and a-quarter. The horse had, earlier in the day, laded out in the last furlong of a mile race. The explanation of the driver, S. C. Griggs, was accepted. The main event, the Irving Memorial, was won by Ferriby, who was favourite in a good betting race. Cymric made a good effort under the steadier of 10 stone, but he weakened in the last half-furlong, after having to be hurried along from the half-mile where Ferriby tackled hirh. Flame Queen came from a long way back to be a close third, and would have given some trouble had she not been kept so far back early. Two short-priced favourites, St. Cloud and Aggravate were decisively beaten. Both had every chance, though St. Cloud covered some extra ground. Aggravate was beaten in the Highweight Handicap by the Grey-mouth-owned Adina,' who at his previous start had run a close third in a neck-and-neck finish at Omoto. In the final event, St. Cloud made a good effort under her 9.13, but Flame Queen had her beaten with about 50 yards to go, when Metric flashed up to win from Flame Queen. St. Cloud, who was a good third, was backed down to a short price, and carried 364 tickets more than the second favourite, Flame Queen. Metric, who was at a good price, had run a fair third in the mile hack race earlier in the day, to Miss Waitarere and Winchelsea. Remaining results in detail: —

NOTES ON THE RACING.

[special to “star.”]

CHRISTCHURCH, April 26

Always a Winner: Flagman won the Tekapo Hurdles from end to end. Sir Frederick, who made some faulty jumps, followed him over the first mile, and Donadea ran into second place turning for home. Flagman was not troubled in the run to the post to beat Sir Frederick, who got up to wrest second honours from Donadea on the post. Green Boa was eight lengths back. Never in Doubt: Ann Mie had the field for the Electric Stakes in trouble from the outset. She led Don Roy, Force, Princess Myosotis and Hurry Girl into the straight, and was never called upon. Princess Myosotis held on for second money from Hurry Girl, who lost some ground at the start.

First Success: The favourite, the imported horse Spencer Volo, went to the front a furlong from the post in the Gladstone Trot, and appeared to be in for his first win, but Recluse finished brilliantly to easily account for him. Catalpa was a fair third, in front of Technique.

Timaru Cup: King’s Toast was one of the early leaders in the Timaru Cup, but was near the rear with Prudent Prince and Willie Win (who got away badly) at the half mile. At this stage Airline was three lengths out in front from Not Out, but he retired once the straight was reached, and Not Out was challenged by Wardress and Prudent Prince, w.th King’s Toast showing up wide out. Not Out appeared to have bright prospects until King’s Toast flashed up, and in a close finish the latter got up to gain a narrow victory. Prudent Prince was close up third, just heading off Wardress. There was then a gap to Airline, Willie Wine and Cherokee almost in line.

Improved Form: There was a surprise in the Smithfield Hack Handicap. The favourite, Rawhamai, appeared to be the likely winner inside the last furlong, when Confidant, who failed in the maiden event, came with a late run to have an easy win from Rawhamai, who narrowly beat Nightglass, Lady Derby and Irish Lass, who were separated by half-heads.

There was a marked demonstration when the winner returned, witn many calls for “putting him out.” The matter was taken up by the vice-president and stipendiary steward, who ascertained that the connections of Confidant had supported him the first time, and let him go when he won. As this explanation was considered satisfactory to the officials, it was decided, there was no necessity to call a meeting of the stewards.

Hearth Again: Density was installed a good favourite for J.he Smithfield Hack Handicap, but after beginning smartly, she was steadied in behind Don’t Forget, and the latter had a clear lead entering the straight from Density, Rebel Mate and Hearth. Density could not improve her position in the run. home, and Hearth and Rebel Mate showed out to tackle Don’t Forget. Hearth soon drew to the front and won comfortably from Don’t Forget. Rebel Mate was a fair third, two lengths in front of Craiglea, with Density beaten off. / . , , Otinua Trot: Loyal Friend was sent out at a short price for the Otipug Trot, and when he held a useful leap a furlong from the post his success seemed assured, but the second choice, Ronald Logan had his measure nearing the post and beat him comfortably. Scapa Flow was a creditable third, a neck m front of Joan ConquestFoxette Prevails: The concluding event was won by Foxette, a stable mate of Valcron, who was sent out win favourite'. Foxette and Roman Son were well back when the stiaignt was reached, and their chance ol getting up t° the leader ih the straignt, Big Joe, did not appear very hopeful: but Foxette wore him down in the last few strides, and gained the vei - diet right on the. line. Roman Son finished on solidly into third place, two lengths in front of Lockheed, who was also one of the real division for d good way. Valcron, Blue Abbey, Sweet and Johnemby all looked to be likely a furlong from home, but all peteied out. RACING AT MELBOURNE.
