MONTHLY MEETING.

HOKITIKA, April 22.

The Hokitika Borough Council met yesterday. The Deputy-Mayor, Mr. A. R. Elcock, presided over the following members: Crs. C. Caliari, W. H. Stopforth, ’J. Fox, D. P. Stuart, T. W. Duff.

On the motion of Cr. Stopforth, a ; committee consisting of Crs. Stuart, Fox, Caliari, Duff and himself was appointed to confer with Kanieri Electric Ltd. regarding the menace of trees on Cass Square and to make any arrangements necessary for their removal. It was decided to ask the foreman to report on what footpaths are in condition for tar-sealing. The financial statement showed — Receipts £766/14/4; expenditure £1,813/19/6. Accounts amounting to £1,139/13/- were passed for payment.

The Overseer’s report was read and approved, the Overseer being congratulated on his latest tar-sealing work.

The Abattoirs report:—Stock slaughtered for month of March amounted to 30 cows, 30 heifers, 60 bullocks, 125 lambs, 318 sheep, 18 pigs, 10 calves. Condemned: two cows, three sheep. Fees collected for the month amounted to £B2/9/6. for the corresponding month last .year were £9B/13/6. CORRESPONDENCE. The Royal Humane Society of New Zealand wrote, stating that it is making its annual appeal for funds

and asking for a further contribution. — £l/1/- granted. • Mr Ken Aitken, Pioneer Hotel, i applied for permission to erect a ' verandah at the Gibson’s Quay enI trance to the hotel.—Granted. ’ . The Superintendent of Kanieri I Electric Limited, wrote, pointing out * the inconvenience through trees and branches in Cass Square falling on the electric power lines; and stating that the company had met°this expense for the past 20 years, and as !the menace is increasing with the j age of the trees the company i that the liability for this form of ■ damage should rest with the Council, and that in future it proposes to charge the Council with any line reconditioning expenses caused by damage from the trees in Cass Square; also advising that there is a particularly large limb overhanging jthe roadway and the power lines at | the intersection of Stafford and Britl.tan Streets, and asking the Council i to take action to have it removed. ! The company is prepared to deviate i its main line temporarily while the | work is being carried out and to as- ! sist with the labour on a half-share i basis for the actual tree trimming. | Messrs E. Hewer and O. Hahn, Park i Street, wrote, offering to fell and j remove the trees in Cass Square, for i j the sum of £ 4 per tree, all wood and debris to be removed (except the stumps), the wood to be applicants’ property to dispose of as they think fit.—Referred to sub-committee. The Hon. Secretary, Hokitika Beautifying Association wrote asking that the grass on the sides of the streets, be cut again with a mower before /the Winter sets in, and also that half-a-dozen loads of gravel be ' delivered at the foot of Sewell Street, at the point where the Association is beautifying the harbour reserve,

and if the gravel is supplied the Association will make arrangements to have it spread. The Association point out that they are doing all that their limited means permit to improve certain parts of the town, and they would be very grateful for any assistance the Council can give them. —Approved and referred to overseer.

Mr D. M. Pettigrew, Bealey Street, y/rote asking if the Council will tarseal (second coat) the footpath in front of his residence. Mi’ Pettigrew tar-sealed (first coat) at his own expense.—Referred to overseer to report.

Mrs I. L. Perry, Hall Street, wrote asking the Council to tar-seal the footpath along the frontage of her residence in Hall Street, and undertaking to pay half the cost of the work.—Referred to Overseer to report.

Mr R. Fleming, Revell Street, wrote asking that the water course through the back of his property be cleaned out, ’ and complaining of the dumping of gravel along the frontage of his property, causing the water channel to block.—Watercourse to be attended to. The Library Committee wrote, asking for a conference with the Council to consider the institution of a free library.—Referred to the new council for consideration. The Westland Hospital Board wrote, notifying the Hospital levy on the Borough for the ensuing year would amount to £2,773/4/10, an increase of £571/2/10 on that of the previous year.—Recommended to the new council for approval. Kanieri Electric Ltd. wrote regarding street lighting, and offering reduce the street fighting charges to 80 per cent, of the contract charges, and to pay half the Cost of shades

required by the regulations.—Variation of contract approved. On the motion of Cr. Stuart, it was decided to recommend that a committee be set up to investigate the requirements, plans and cost of a new town hall, to be proceeded with when conditions are normal. It was resolved to re-seal Revell Street, between Stafford and Weld Streets, as soon as opportunity permitted.

It is understood that the Mayor, Mr G. A. Perry, will seek re-elec-tion at the next municipal election.
