The profits of the Commonwealth Bank in the half-year ended December 31 amounted to £1,208,221, compared with £968,204 in the previous half-year. The Rimu Flat return for the week ended March 25 was 1230 z 2dwt from 40,799 yards in 131 J hours. SNOWY RIVER. The return from the Snowy River dredge was 148 ounces for 133 hours. ARGO. The Argo dredge return this week was 41 ounces in 133 hours from 12,000 yards. BLACKBALL CREEK The return from the Blackball Creek dredge is 50 ozs. for 124 hours. MAORI GOLD. Maori Gold Ltd. reports that owing to the breaking of the ladder winch shaft on Saturday night last, the dredge was out of action until 4 p.m. on March 27, and as a consequence dredging operations were carried on for only 46 hours for which a return of 230 z 13dwts retorted gold was secured from 3,800 yards.

BIG RIVER GOLD MINES. Mine report for March: —No. 5 Level (No. 1 Winze): Sunk to 38 feet. Stringers and leaders of quartz were intersected, but no solid body of ore being exposed, a crosscut was put into hanging wall. A narrow quartz track was followed for eight feet. This has widened to 10 inches of quartz, and is making up the face from the floor of crosscut. Connection to No. 4 Level: In operations off this rise, only a boulder of stone was proved, which did not extend in any direction. No. 7 Level: South drive advanced to 132 feet south of crosscut, but the track has disappeared, and this has been stopped. Stoping now in progress where the reef showed up strongly at a point 84 feet from crosscut. Reef has improved in the south end above the level and is now 36 inches wide. No. 7 Rise: Connection made with the winze from No. 6 Level, and an intermediate level has been started southwards. Reef in roof of this level is eight inches wide, but widens out some 10 feet above intermediate. Expect to re-commence crushing operations at the beginning of April.
