MONTHLY MEETING. [OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] ajs!©. HOKITIKA, March 18. The Hokitika Borough Council met ( yesterday. The Deputy-Mayor, Mr A. R. Elcock, presided over the following:—Messrs T. W. Duff, G. Heinz, ,F. D. E. Freitas, D. P. Stuart, and C. Caliari. ’’ A motion of sympathy was passed with the Mayor, Mr G. A. Perry, in his illness. ' Abattoir report: Stock slaughtered for month of February amounted to 39 cows, 19 heifers, 51 bullocks,, 137 lambs, 277 sheep, 24 pigs, 4 calves. Condemned: 2 cows, 1 heifer, 1 sheep. Fees for the month amounted to £7,6 7/-, compared with £B6/5/- for the corresponding month last year. • The Treasurer’s statement showed receipts £1399/12/2; expenditure £lOB3/0/2. Accounts amounting to £764/5/5 were passed for payment. The Town Clerk reported that two traffic control posts in Lower Jollie Street had been chopped down and thrown into the river.—The Council decided to replace them with iron rails.

From Mr. T. E. Williams, asking that the footpath on the north side of Park Street between his frontage and Sale Street, be cleared of growth and formed.

From N.Z. Refrigerating Co., advising that the following quantities of meat were delivered into the Hokitika Abattoir area during the month of February, 1941, viz.: 38 sheep, 6 lambs. From the Chief Inspector of Explosives advising that the Department’s inspecting auditor found that all monies due to the Public Account for dangerous goods license fees and for motor spirit re-sellers licenses, had been duly paid in. From the Chief Inspector of Explosives forwarding copy of the Licensed Industries General Regulations, 1940 (serial 1940/279) and the Industrial Efficiency (Motor Spirits Retailers) Regulations, 1941 (serial 1941/21) and pointing out that these regulations come into operation from February 20, 1941. The new regulations prescribed a scale of f ees .—if is pointed out that in certain instances that where a re-seller has more than one pump, that some of the pumps are being used by the Government for the storage of defence reserves petrol, which is not for sale, and in these instances, the Minister of Internal Affairs would be glad to know whether the Council will agree to waive its rental charges for kerbside pumps which are so used.

J From the Town Clerk, Stratford, ■ forwarding the text of a resolution passed by the Stratford Borough Council, urging the Government to ■ exercise its powers to enforce service under the Home Defence and Emergency Precautions Schemes, for . all those who are fit and able to ren- ' der service therein, and who are not : at present being called on for overseas service, or who are serving in the defence forces of the Dominion. The Area Commander, Home Guard i (Greymouth) wrote, pointing out that certain expenses are necessary for Home Guard purposes, viz., purchase of stationery, postage, and petrol purchased for the use of members travelling a distance of three miles or ■ over to attend N.C.O. classes in the centres where courses of instruction are given for Home Guard purposes. The expenditure to be approved and certified by unit commanders and submitted to the local authority for payment, and it is suggested that the Council set aside an amount not exceeding £5O to meet such expenses. — £5O voted to special fund. Mrs R. M. Tinetti and lour other petitioners wrote asking that the footpath on west side of Sale Street between Stafford and Hampden Streets, be gravelled.—To be attended To. • Mr Frank Stuart, North Brittan Street, wrote asking for a domestic water service connection to his house erected on section 138 and also for the formation of Brittan Street to his frontage.—Water granted and Works Committee to report. The District Engineer, Post and Telegraph Department, wrote asking for permission to erect a public tele-zPhorte-call box in Stafford Street, near Davie Street. The cabinet would be placed against and on the footpath side of the Kanieri Electric Power pole in Stafford Street, approximately 24 yards on the Kanieri side’ of Davie Street.—Approved. Mrs D. Spencer, Cobden, applied for medical expenses caused through injury to her son in Cass Square on February 1, 1941.—Dealt with in committee and referred to Assurance Co. Westland County Council, forwarding an account for £l5/17/6, being half cost in connection with the Hokitika aerodrome.—Payment deferred. Cecil Edward Sparkes, sanitary contractor, offering to renew the existing sanitary contract for a period of one year commening on August 1, 1941, at the existing rate of payment of £670 a year.—Agreed. Mrs. Martha Fitzgerald, notifying that she is having a path tarsealed, and asking the Council to pay half cost of the job.—No action taken. The District High School, application for use of Cass Square on two afternoons (to be fixed) for the school sports and asking that a grass track 110 yards long by 15 yards wide be cut as close as possible and if also possible a circular track 440 yards long by three yards wide.—Agreed. Mr. J. Taylor, Kanieri Road, asking for domestic water supply to his premises.—Granted.
