HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING. . [OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HOKITIKA, January 21. The monthly meeting of the Hokitika Borough Council was held last evening. Cr. Elcock presided, in the absence of the Mayor (Mr Perry). Also present: Crs. T. W. Duff, C. Caliari, W. H. Stopforth, J. Fox and D. P. Stuart. Apologies were made for the absence of the Mayor and Crs. Freitas and Heinz.

Inward correspondence included letters from the New Zealand Refrigerating Company, advising that the following quantities of meat were delivered into the Hokitika Abattoir area, during the month of December, 1940, viz., 49 sheep, 4 lambs. Mr C. P. Duncan, application for a 21 years’ lease of Municipal Reserve, 486, North Sewell Street (C.T. 28/ 224) and offering a yearly rental f'? £2/10/-. The lease to be grant}, under section 5 (e) of the Pub} 1 . Bodies’ Leases Act, 1908, and the ’fiirst schedule thereto. Tenders for Hie leasing of this reserve closed at 4 p.pi. on January 25, 1940, and as no tenders were received the Council can, under section 8 (5) now grant a lease by a private contract at a rent not less than the upset rent at which the original lease was offered.—Lease granted from January 20. The Traffic Inspector wrote, pointing out the desirability of providing a stand for passenger vehicles in the. borough, and recommending a site in Weld Streeet along the side of the Road Services building, and asking the Council to take the necessary- action to make this a ’bus stand. —It was resolved that a committee be set up to consider the question of a parking place, the committee being Crs. Stopforth, Stuart and Caliari. Mr A. M. Coles wrote, tendering his resignation as one of the Council’s representatives on the Hokitika Library Committee, owing to his transfer to Westport, and thanking the Council for the opportunity to serve on that committee.—Referred to Library Committee to appoint a representative.

Mr A. Rae, Livingstone Street, wrote, stating that the culvert across the Livingstone Street drain opposite the entrance to his property is in need of repair, and that if the Council will supply the timber he will do the work. —Referred to the Public Works Committee.

Mr A. Rae wrote asking that the road be widened from Mr Appleton’s (senr.) frontage to Park Street, so that one vehicle can pass another without running over the lawn which has been made at the side of the street. To be attended to. Mr G. Michel wrote, stating that rubbish is being dumped on the frontage of his property in North Revell Street, and also that sand is being removed along his frontage and above high-water mark, and asking that both practices be stopped.—Mr Michel to be asked for the names of the offenders, and it was resolved that efforts be made to find a new borough refuse dump. Mr E. Hillman, secretary of the Grey Waterside Workers’ Picnic Committee, wrote asking for the use of Cass Square for their annual picnic on Saturday, January 25.— Granted.

Mr J. Kermode, secretary of the Blackball Picnic Committee, wrote, asking for the use of Cass Square for their annual . picnic on Saturday, February 15 next. —Granted. The Secretary of the Brunner* Picnic Commitee applied for the use of Cass Square for picnic on Saturday, March I.—Granted. The Abattoirs’ report showed the slaughtering for the month of December as follows: —35 cows, 16 heifers, 51 bullocks, 304 sheep, 271 lambs, 19 pigs, 3 calves. Amount of fees received £B4/4/6, compared with £BB/17/6 for December last year. Accounts aggregating £356/14/2 were passed for payment. It was resolved that Mr W. Cropp, newly-appointed foreman, receive the same salary as the retired foreman did, viz., £3OO per annum. It was resolved to carry out repairs to the slaughterman’s cottage, and it was also resolved to proceed with the erection of a caretaker’s cottage at the Centennial Swimming Bath. j The foreman’s report on work done was read and approved.
