WATERSIDERS DISMISSED

AUCKLAND REFUSAL PENALTY. [per press association.] AUCKLAND, January 15. Five waterside workers have been dismissed from the Auckland water ■ front for the duration of the war. The men, who walked off their jobs on Monday and Tuesday of last week when asked to handle butter and cheese brought out of the Auckland Farmers’ Freezing Company’s cool stores by new labour, acted in sympathy with the 140 cool store workers. who were dismissed for refusing to work on Sundays until their claims for higher pay and better conditions were met.

The waterside workers suffered the usual penalty, which is being stood down for two days or, as in this case, foi' the duration of the job on which they were engaged when dismissed. They returned to work on Wednesday of last week, but are now suffering a greater penalty. The action was taken by the'' Waterfront Control Commission; but the Auckland Waterfront Controller, Captain C. V. Stanich, declined to comment or make an announcement about the men’s dismissal. The secretary of x the Auckland Waterside Workers’ Union. Mr. A. Girven, said the union had no statement to make about the men’s penalty in the meantime; but a report on the matter, which the union was handling nationally, would be published later.
