FIGURES FOR GREYMOUTH. The chief feature of the vital statistics for Greymouth for 1940 is an increase of 61 in the number of births, compared with the figure for the previous year. The' total of 386 births is the highest for at least 12 years, being 19 more than the previous highest number, in 1938, and well in advance of any year from 1929. In contrast, there was a decrease of 25 in the number of deaths during the year, the total being 121. Possibly due to war conditions, 170 marriage notices were issued at Greymouth this year, being 25 in excess of last year’s total and constituting a record for the past 12 years. Marriages by the Registrar (23) were one below last year’s record total.
