NEW YEAR RACING

NINE MEETINGS TO-MORROW 'J---.'-Greymouth Races at Omoto Eight race meetings and one trotting fixture, ranging from Auckland in the north to Wyndham in the south will be held tomorrow (New Year’s Day). Seven of the fixtures will be concluded on Thursday, while on that day also the Oamaru Club will race, and the Southland Racing Club will commence a two-day fixture. The third day of the Auckland Racing Club’s meeting will be the principal racing fixture to-morrow, while the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s opening day at Addington will provide plenty of interest for followers of the light harness sport.

The holiday attraction for West Coasters will be the Greymouth Jockey Club’s Midsummer meeting at Omoto, opening to-morrow, and concluding on Thursday. Win-and-place betting will be used at all meetings except the Hawke’s Bay, Marton, Wairarapa and Waikouaiti fixtures.

With the prospects bright for ideal weather, the Greymouth Jockey Club should experience, a successful meeting at Omoto. The fields are good, and of sufficient qualty to provide excellent racing, while the use of win-and-place betting should assist to advance the totalisator turnover. This is the first occasion for many years that the Greymouth Club has used the win-and-place system. • The track is in splendid order, and the appointments will be first class, with afternoon tea, luncheon, and other refreshments obtainable on the course. The usual train arrangements will cater for the convenience of race-goers, special trains leaving Greymouth for Omoto at 11.30, 11.50 a.m., 12.15, 12.55 and 1.38 p.m. A gold nugget tie pin has been donated by Mr. D. R. Dowell, of Greymouth, for presentation to the rider of the winner of the Greymouth Cup. Following is a review of the fields: 12.30: NOVICE STAKES, five and a-half furlongs.—Stock Exchange 9.1, Dark Agnes, Monopoly, Sham Raid, Silver Night, Sweet Mystery, The Tryst, Trench Coat 8.10, Bright Lad, Perpetuate, Rockery 8.5, Sir Gundi 7.5.

Twelve runners are carded for the opening event on the programme, and though there are several engaged who did not race at Hokitika, Rockery, who was unlucky there, looks to have a big chance . He should beat the penalised Stock Exchange. The Tryst was unlucky at the barrer at Hokitika, and will be prominent. Sir Gundi, Trench Coat and Dark Agnes are promising. The public fancies may be Rockery, The Tryst and Stock Exchange. 1.15: BOROUGH TROT, 2.27 class, one mile.—Diamond Cluster, Free Author, Joan Potts, Lady Travis, Leamington, MaUri McKinney, Narvik, Opportunity, Voluntary, Welcome Stranger, Woolwich, Helenora scr., Four Square, Mitewin 12, Shady Glen 24, Kate Bingen 36. In the Borough Trot, Free Author, Opportunity, and Narvik raced well enough at Hokitika to suggest chances with Narvik the best prospect. Diamond Cluster is bred well enough to be useful, but has been a long time making good. Joan Potts, Narvik, and Opportunity may be the best of those off the front. Shady Glen, a half-sister to Glen Travis, Mitewin and'Four Square have no recent form to recommend them. Kate Bingen has pace enough to be prominent. The favourites may be Narvik, Opportunity and Kate Bingen. 1.55: COUNTY HACK HANDICAP, one mile.—Gay Parade 9.5, Philibun 8.8, Miss Waitarere 8.6, Elmarch 8.4, Phil 8.2, Greenbank, Muriet, Great Bramble 7.13, Lady Magellan, Night Shift 7.7. . Lady Magellan and Gay Parade will be bracketed. Gay Parade won so well at Hokitika, that with a penalty of only five pounds, and two furlongs less to cover he should be a firm favourite. Miss Waitarere may be better placed later. Greenbank has shown promise in Canterbury, and if he can handle the small track will be prominent. Great Bramble finished well to _ be second to Gay Parade at Hokitika, and will be supported. Philibun showed promise of better things at Hokitika, but the others have no form to recommend them. Gay Parade, Greenbank and Great Bramble should be the best supported.

2.35: GREYMOUTH CUP, one and aquarter miles.—Roy Bun 9.2, Glenora Boy 8.5, Phil 7.12, Waitaka 7.11, Entail 7.7, Donadea 7.4, Metric 7.0. Waitaka won so well at Hokitika that he is bound to carry heavy support in the Cup. Roy Bun and Metric are likely to improve a good deal on Hokitika form, especially the former. Glenora Boy ran a sound race at Hokitika. Phil appears to be out of his class here. Entail is another who should be improved by his race at Hokitika. Donadea, who has been racing over hurdles, will have a following. The places may be filled by Roy Bun, Waitaka and Glenora Boy. 3.15: PARGA HANDICAP, six furlongs. —Skyrena 9.5, Peacock 9.0, Rebel Chief, Adina 8.5, Raceaway 8.4, Epic 7.12, Copyist 7.9, Lifeguard, Rockery 7.7. Skyrena should be able to turn the tables on her Hokitika victor, Adina in the Paroa Handicap, but a newcomer in Peacock presents a problem. However, he looks better placed . in the last event. He will be a fancied candidate wherever he is produced. Rebel Chief and Raceaway look the most likely improvers of the others, though Epic, more patiently handled than at Hokitika, is capable of taking part in the finish. The final summingtip may ‘be in favour of Skyrena, Adina and Rebel Chief. 3.55: STEWARDS’ HANDICAP TROT, 3.5 class, one and a-quarter miles. — Dan’s Pride, Helenora, Joan Potts, Kia Ora King, Lady Travis, Lough Derg, Narvik, Prince McElwyn, Woolwich scr., Mauri McKinney 12, Four Square 24, Guy Whispers 36. Prince McElwyn and Narvik have the best form of those off the front of the Stewards’ Trot, with Lough Derg a likely improver. Form in the first trot should be instructive, but the chances of Prince McElwyn, Nar-

vik and Lough Derg make most appeal. 4.35: MINERS’ HACK HANDICAP, six and a-half furlongs.—Adina 9.4, Miss Tasta 8.10, Miss Waitarere, 8.8, Philibun 8.7, Metric, Greenbank, Big Joe 8.1, Lady Magellan 8.0, Sweet Mystery, Radio Call 7.9. Big Joe and Radio Call are two fresh horses in the Miners’ Hack, and both, especially Big Joe, have shown promising form. Adina has a good weight, and should be held safe by Miss Waitarere, whose race at Hokitika should have benefited her. Philibun and Metric are likely improvers on Hokitika form. The distance may be too short for Greenbank, but Sweet Mystery is a possibility. Miss Tasta showed all hex* old pace at Hokitika, until her condition gave out, and she should be a dangerous contestant. Miss Waitarere, Metric and Big Joe should carry most support. 5.15: BRUNNER HANDICAP, seven furlongs.—Skyrena 9.5, Gay Parade 9.0, Peacock 8.12, Waitaka 8.6, Rebel Chief 8.5, Epic, Lifeguard 7.7. Skyrena and Gay Parade will be bracketed. All the acceptors for the Brunner Handicap have engagements earlier in the day, and their form will be the best guide. Most appeal is made by Peacock, Skyrena and Waitaka.
