. DRAUGHTS [PER PRESS ASSOCIATidSr.] CHRISTCHURCH,. Dec. 30. The New Zealand centennial draughts tournament concluded to-day, the new champion being J. Gardiner (Nelson), whose total of 20 points was two ahead of the runner-up, G. A. Brown, with i 8 points. The new champion has won the title previously in 1903, 1908, 1914, and 1928; while Brown has been champion on six previous occasions. The handicap tournament was won by W. Davis (Wellington), the run-ners-up being J. Gilhooly and F. W. Graham (Dannevirke). CHESS CONGRESS TIMARU, December 30. The Chess Congress was continued to-day, two sessions being held. Results of completed games were:— Championship Fifth Round—Newick beat Kelling; Wade drew with Allefhand; Bennett beat Lennard; Fairburn beat Vincent. Sixth round—Wade beat Bennett; Kelling beat Vincent. Major Open Tournament
Fifth Round —Pearse beat Miss Collingson; Steele beat Mrs. Short; Hardy beat Kemshed. Sixth Round—Wallace beat Kemshed; Hardy beat Miss Collinson: Mrs. Golding beat Pearse: Traves and Mrs. Short drew. BOWLING. In the final of the pairs championship of the Greymouth Bowling Club, J. Smith and Chisholm (s) defeated Shallcrass and Moss (s). The rinks final was won by Hughes, J. Smith, Robertson, Mercer (s) who defeated Parlane, Wells, Browne and Chisholm (s)._ . . The finals of the two lives, in the senior singles championship were played on the club’s green last evening. In the first life final, Mercer defeated A. Hughes 18/11; and in the second life final, Whibley defeated Sharp, junr., 19/17. Mercer and Whibley will contest the championship final.
