WESTLAND RACES.

WAITAKA AND ADINA SUCCEED.

The Westland Racing Club was favoured with perfect weather for Its Christmas meeting on the Hokitika racecourse on Saturday. Though the gate receipts were down by about £3O, there was a good attendance, and the totalisator handled £4,988 10/(for the eight races) compared with £4,231 10/- (for seven races) at the corresponding meeting last year, an increase of £757. The racing throughout the day was interesting, and it was an entertaining day’s sport, capably conducted. The' track was in good order, and the appointments were up to the usual standard. The principal event was won by, Waitaka, owned by Mr. C. L. Kettle, of Greymouth, and trained by J. B. Pearson at Riccarton. At his first start from Pearson’s stable, Waitaka ran a good third at Hororata, and on Saturday, at his next start, he won easily, after leading from the barrierrise. The aged Robespierre gelding should add to his record on the circuit. The open sprint was won by the former southern sprinter, Adina, now owned by Mr. A. Kyle, of Greymouth. The Rosenor gelding was having his first start in Mr. Kyle’s colours, and was capably handled by his trainer, V. Lee. Skyrena.put up a good performance to get within a head of Adina, after giving him a good break over the last two furlongs. The distance hack race was won with the greatest of ease by Gay Parade. He was not opposed by a strong field, and the time was not fast, bijt he won well enough to suggest further successes. With the exception of the maiden race, the starting of Mr. G. Reed was good, and he could not be blamed for the bad start in the maiden, as almost all the runners gave considerable trouble.

After the running of the Maiden Stakes, the Judicial Committee met to consider a protest by F. Escott, owner-trainer of Rockery, against Stock Exchange being awarded first place. The committee ruled that the judge’s placing be not altered. M. Hollands, rider of the winner, was cautioned by the Stipendiary Steward (Mr. J. S. Shaw) for repeatedly looking round in the straight. NOTES ON THE RACING.

WIN FOR STOCK EXCHANGE.

Stock Exchange, Rockery and Bright Lad were the principal causes of a lengthy delay at the start, and when the field ultimately got away to a straggling start, Stock Exchange jumped away to the lead from Rockery and Bright Lad with The Tryst

next, and Perpetuate and Radio Cgll well back. Stock Exchange came round the home turn well clear of Rockery, with Bright Lad and The Tryst next, but with little chance. Rockery finished well and failed by only a head to reach Stock Exchange, who ran out in the straight, and forced Rockery to finish on the inside. The Tryst was third, six lengths away, followed by Bright Lad, Radio Call and Perpetuate. Had Rockery been able to finish straight over the last furlong, he would almost certainly have won. Tote £587.

Surprising Odds: Despite a recent victory at Hororata, Boreas was allowed to go out at nearly double figures for the Innovation Trot, and he won easily. Lough Derg and Lady Travis were the quckest beginners, and led past the stand from Voluntary, Free Author, Airline, Opportunity, and Helenora. Down the back Boreas improved his position steadily. Lough Derg Was still the leader as they turned for home from Free Author, with Boreas, Airline and Opportunity next. Boreas came away in the run home, and was not troubled to win by two lengths from Airline, who finished well to beat Free Author by a length. Opportunity was fourth, followed by Lady Travis, Lough Derg, Narvik, Helenora and Dawn Grattan. The last-named fell just after passing the post, but neithei' the horse nor the driver was injured. Tote £660.

Won Easily: Following up his good third to Knight Commander and Skyrena at Hororata, Waitaka won the Christmas Handicap all .the way- He was first out from Entail, Glenora Boy, Metric and Roy Bun. The order remained the same to the straight, where Waitaka was clear of Glenora Boy and Entail together, and Roy Bun and Metric. Waitaka was not troubled to win by two lengths from Glenora Boy, with Roy Bun finishing well on the rails half a length away, third. Metric was fourth ahead of Entail, who faded badly. Tote £667.

Gay Parade Easily: Miss Tasta was last away in the Westland Hack Handicap, but within a furlong had raced to the front, and led past the stand about eight lengths clear of Phil, with Queen Linda and Gay Parade next, and Great Bramble last. Five furlongs from home, Gay Parade started a forward move, and caught Miss Tasta within a furlong, to lead her into the straight with Great Bramble showing up, Phil next, and Queen Linda tailed off. Gay Parade was not off the bit to win by two lengths from Great Bramble, with Miss Tasta three lengths away third, and Phil fourth. Queen Linda made no showing. The winner was a short-priced favourite. Tote £605.

Narrow Victory: Adina, who was not harshly treated with 7.10, considering his useful form, in the south, won the principal sprint, the Thompson Memorial, in a close finish, just beating the fast-fin-ishing Skyrena. Epic and Copyist were the leaders when the field settled down, from Raceaway and Adina, with a break to Skyrena and Rebel Chief, who were slowest away. Across the top Copyist was the leader and he turned for home ahead of Epic, Adina and Raceaway, with Skyrena coming through on the fence. Adina soon hit the front, and stalled off a hot challenge from Skyrena by a head, with Raceaway a length away third, and Epic fourth. Rebel Chief was well back, ahead of Copyist. Tote £7BBl.

Made Amends: Rorqual, who broke at the start of the first trot, made amends in the President’s Handicap by a decisive victory, 'after having the run of the race. Airline was the leader past the stand after going six furlongs, from Kia Ora King, Rorqual, Narvik, Lady Travis, Lough Derg and Jarrah. Kia Ora King soon dropped out, and Airline turned for home first, with Narvik, Rorqual, and Lough Derg almost on terms, with Jarrah showing up at the back. Rorqual ran about under the whip in the straight, but won decisively by a length from Narvik, with Jarrah finishing fast half a length away. Airline tired into fourth place, and Lough Derg and Lady Travis were next. Tote £760.

Highweight to Peacock: Five scratchings reduced the field for the final event to three. It was a surprisingly even betting « race. Peacock was made favourite, and he led all the way. Lifeguard and Rebel Chief followed him in that order into the straight, but Peacock was not hard ridden to win by a neck from Rebel Chief, with Lifeguard a length away. Tote £ssl|. QUEEN LINDA. Mr. J. L. Bourke’s Gainscourt-Cla-vers mare, Queen Linda, who showed no dash in the Westland Handicap at Hokitika dn Saturday will not race again on the West Coast circuit. She has not been galloping well for some time, and will probably be definitely retired. DUNEDIN J.C. NOT OUT WINS HANDICAP.

NOTES ON THE RACING.

[special to “star.”]

DUNEDIN, December 28.

The Dunedin Jockey Club held a successful two-day meeting this week, and there was a considerable increase in the totalisator turnover as compared with that on the two cortesponding days last year, when q three-day meeting was held owing to the dropping of a day of the two-day Spring meeting. The principal event to-day was won by the Riccarton-trained Not Out, who led practically throughout the mile journey, and who outclassed his opponents throughout. The time for the mile, 1.38 4-5, was only two-fifths 'of a second outside the purse record. Mona’S Song was the best of the remainder, and had an easy second placing from Heidelberg and Night Pal. The much-discussed Boswell ran a poor race, but is likely to be heard of at the Southland meetings next week. Strip drifted to last place during the middle stages, and was hulled up before the post was reached. St. Cloud was installed favourite for the Grandstand Handicap, but after looking likely a furlong from home, when she, Spanish Lad and Lord Nuffield were disputing the lead, 'she compounded and finished out of a place. Lord Nuffield had charge nearing the line, but Spendthrift pushed 'through on the fence, and got up to beat him by a head. Spanish Lad was a close third, clear of Doria, who did not reproduce her first day’s form. ' The Fernhill Hack Handicap was responsible for an outstanding performance on the part of the favourite Pleading, who from No. 1 at the barrier, was squeezed back early, and. at one stage gave the leader Cragilea several lengths’ advantage. Craiglea appeared to be in for an easy win a few chains from the post, but Pleading, with a remarkable effort over the last furlong, gradually crept up on him, and a dead-heat was declared. Sham Boy, who appears to be coming back to form, was a good third, a length in front of Anglo-Irish and Lawford Lass abreast.

Recollection, better handled than bn the first day, proved his class amongst the poor hurdle talent at the meeting. He trailed the field for over half of the journey, and when the leaders Flagman, Donadea and Airdrie weakened, he ran past them and carried on wi£h an easy win from Donadea, who outstayed Airdrie. Flagman was a fair fourth. Gold Nugget entered the winning list by accounting for a big field in the Novice Handicap. The favourite Rue missed the jump out, and was hopelessly out of the contest. Central Star and Gold Nugget entered the straight abreast, and the. latter soon drew to the front. Kurawhi came with a late run to get to within half a length of Gold Nugget after being well back during the middle stages. Central Star weakened into third place, four lengths in front of My Song, with Ko,hara and Nisi Prius next. Desert Maid added to her consistent record by winning the Juvenile Handicap in a decisive manner. Southern Wave was first into the straight from Princess Myosotis and Desert Maid, but the run home had not long been entered upon before Desert Maid ran past the leaders, and was not further troubled. Palfrey, as on the first day, was slow away, and came with a late run.to gain second money from Southern Wave, who held on to beat the fast-finishing Dash o’ Dublin by a head. The win favourite, Divorced, was never in the picture. Boloyna and his stable mate Mosgiel, not bracketed, disputed favouritism ih the Allanton Handicap, and the former had an easy success, while Mosgiel failed to be prominent. Blissful Lady again acted as pacemaker to the straight entrance, but Boloyna soon ran past her, and won easing up. Second Innings put in a late appearance and gained second money from Petersham, who also finished with a brilliant dash, and beat Hanlon by a head. Raeburn, as on the first day, failed to leave the mark.

Happy Night justified his favouritism for the Farewell Hack Handicap by outstaying his opponents and winfaing by two lengths from two outsiders in Aspire and Foxette. Ferriby Was the leader for a good way, but was done with a furlong from home, and-Scarteen again failed' to race up to expectations.
