HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING.

HOKITIKA, December 17.

The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening; present: The Mayor (Mr. G. A. Perry), Councillors C. R. Elcock, T. ,W. Duff, C. Caliari, D. P. Stuart, J. Fox, F. D. E. Freitas, G. Heinz. An apology for absence was received from Cr. V/. IT. Stopforth. Owing to complaints, it was decided to instruct the outside staff to refrain from using coarse unscreened gravel. Receipts were £479/15/2, expenditure £1,219/15/3. Accounts passed for payment amounted to £ 1,252/10/-. Abattoirs report: Stock slaughtered for month of November was 19 cows,, 34 heifers, 48 bullocks, 281 sheep, 9 lambs, 10 pigs, one calf; condemned nil. Fees amounting to £6l/0/6 were collected for the month against £65“ 14/- for the same period last year. . Mr. D. Stevenson was appointed to make the annual inspection of public buildings. CORRESPONDENCE. Mr. John Walsh, Sexton, tendering his resignation as Sexton on account of ill-health. —Accepted; month’s' leave on full pay from January' 1.

Officer-in-Charge, Army Office, Greymouth, advising that Army Headquarters are desirous of obtaining all German machine guns for conversion into training weapons and asking that those handed over to Council about 1920, be returned. A. R. Elcock (agent for W. H. Steel) applicatio nfor consent to the transfer of lease No. 2303 (Reserve No. 533) to John James Mclntosh, of Hokitika, retired hotelkeeper.—Consent granted.

The N.Z. Refrigerating Co., Ltd., advising that the following quantities of meat were delivered into the Hokitika Abattoir area during the month of November, viz.: 80 sheep, two lambs. F. Williamson and Co., application for permission to erect a suspension verandah at the premises of Renton and Co., Hamilton Street, Hokitika. — Granted.

Runanga Borough Council, an appeal for a grant to the fund established on behalf of the dependents of the victims of the mining disaster which occurred at Kaye and Party’s coal mine on November 6, 1940. — £lO granted. Hon. secretary, Hokitika Beautifying Association, asking whether Council will provide, as already promised, sufficient gravel to cover the roadway opposite the area being beautified on the river side at the end of Sewell Street.—Granted, when opportunity permits. Mrs. M. Delbridge, complaining of the size of the unscreened river gravel used along the frontage of her premises in Jollie Street. —To be attended to.

Board’s representative, No. 12, District Highways Council, Greymouth, advising that - the Main Highways Board has retained the powers of maintenance and construction only, and delegated its remaining powers to the Hokitika BoroUgh Council in respect to that portion of GreymouthWaiho State Highway within the Borough of Hokitika. The Main Highways Board will be responsible for the maintenance of the bitumen surfaced roads and shoulders thereof. The maintenance of improvement of any portion of the area, including footpaths, etc., will be the. responsibility of the Hokitika Borough' Council without subsidy being granted. Mrs. M. Fitzgerald, Tudor Street, asking the Council to tar-seal the footpath along the frontage of her property in Tudor Street and she will pay half cost of the work.—To be carried out as opportunity offers. Mr. E. T. Sherriff, application for domestic water supply to the north part of M.R. 446. —Granted at annual fee of £2. *

Mr. George Wright, application for six months’ license for wax works and side shows on private ground.—Granted for 12 months. Fee £5/5/-. State Colleries Picnic Committee, Runanga, application for the use of Cass Square for annual picnic to be held on Saturday, February 1, 1941.— Approved. James S. Langford, application for a lease of part M.R. 537 (fire bell site) Sale Street, for a period of 21 years, the lease to be granted under Section 8, Subsection 7 of the Public Bodies’ Leases Act, 1908, and the lessor may determine the lease at any time by six months’ notice. A special clause to be inserted in the lease providing that the existing fire station and the fire' bell shall remain on the land during the currency of the lease and that the Hokitika Fire Board and Hokitika Fire Brigade shall have free access to the land and structures thereon at any time and also the right to alter, repair, or rebuild the said structures which belong to the Hokitika Fire Board.— Granted, subject to approval by Fire Board.

Emergency 'Precautions Scheme. — The whole Council was appointed the controlling committee. • The Business Men’s Patriotic Committee was granted the sole right to run sideshows on Cass Square. Extra attention is to be given .to Cass Square by the whole outside staff to put it in good condition for the holiday period. A report was received from the secretary of the Baths Committee, the main item of interest being that a larger number of season tickets had 'already been sold than for the whole of last season.

. It was decided that the Council guarantee the cost of the erection of a caretaker’s cottage at the Baths, and suggested that the work be proceeded with immediately.
