WHITEBAIT FISHING
DRASTIC NEW REGULATIONS HOKITIKA, December 10. New regulations governing the fishing and taking of whitebait in the rivers throughout New Zealand have been gazetted, and 'will come into force next season. So far the only copy of the new regulations is in' the ■possession of the local inspector, but individual fishermen have sent for copies to the Marine Department. The regulations are drastic in many ways, some of the most noted being as follow: — , ... Fishermen who fish for profit will have to take out an annual licence, costing £l. Unlicensed fishermen will be permitted to fish, but they will only be permitted to catch 51b of whitebait in any one day. Fishing is to be prohibited above tidal waters. This will mean the elimination of fishing by men who have in previous years fished at Kanieri, or in the upper reaches of the rivers in South Westland, where the tide does not have any effect. Fishing will also be prohibited between sunset and sunrise. This regulation will eliminate the night fisherman, although this phase of the fishing has never been treated seriously. Persons are to be prohibited from fishing within one chain of the mouth ’of any river.
