TO-DAY’S RACING NEWS

Galloping MEETINGS TO COME. December 14—Otaki-Maori. December 14—Waipa. December 14—Hororata. December 21— Manawatu. December 26—Waipukurau. December 26, 28 —Manawatu. December 26, 28—Dunedin. December 26, 28—Taranaki. December 26, 30, January 1, 2— Auckland. December 28—Westland. Change of Riders: W. J. Broughton rode Enrich in the Stewards, and G. R. Tattersail was on him in the Derby, but P. Atkins is to pilot him in his two races (Christmas Handicap and Derby) at Ellerslie. Degage Dead: The Kilbroney mare Degage, who was purchased last year by Mr. A. Rowan, Te Awamutu, died recently. Degage was a good class mare when racing, but she never left anything of her own calibre. Pinocchio: . . Pinocchio, who ran about a little m the run home, was fast overhauling Victoire at the finish of the maiden events at Woodville, and as it was his first race, he looks bound to improve. Showed Pace: '- t Valcony, a sister to Ben Braggie, showed a lot of pace in the two-year-bld race on the first day at Feilding, ' and she will win races when more experienced. She is trained at Hastings by Harold Griffith for her breeder, Mr. T. White. , Ex-pupil: Ex-Pupil, who joined the list of winning two-year-olds at the Woodville meeting on Saturday, is a bay filly by Theio from Sybilsong, by Tractor from Royal Song, the dam of a good one in Mercian Prince. Royal Chief’s Programme: Mr. A. K. Firth was a visitor to Riccarton on Monday, and after consultation with his trainer, F. D. Jones, he decided to leave Royal Chief’s programme at Ellerslie to Jones, who later announced that, all going well in the interim, the horse would carry out his engagement in the Auckland Cup. First Appearance: Making his first appearance since his return from Sydney, Night Pilot was made favourite for the Spring Plate at Whangarei and won narrowly from Softly. He should be capable of beating better fields as he was very confidently ridden. Improvement Likely: Heidelberg should show improved form this season and he will be a light-weight prospect for the middle distance races at Dunedin. He is a six-year-old chestnut gelding by Lord Warden from Poetress, a Turnham mare and a half-sister to Gay Sonnet, dam of Gay Parade. Gladynev Withdrawn: Gladynev has been withdrawn from the Auckland Cup. He is still at Rapdwick, and is engaged in the Summer Cup during'’ the holidays, but it is possible that he will return for the Wellington Cup. Trench Law and Duncannon have also been withdrawn from all engagements at the Auckland meeting. Marshal Hall: .. A feature of the weights for the Railway Handicap is the rating of Marshall Hall, who is apparently considered the best sprinter of his age (apart from Enrich, who was not nominated). Marshall,Hall received 7.12 and has to give weight to Sir Beau 7.10, Don’t Forget 7.7, Kentucky 7.6, Belle Cane 7.4, Doria 7.2, and Foxola 7.0, Marshall Hall has won two open sprints in Auckland province, but he would hot be fancied at the weights in other districts. Winning Sires: At the end of the first four months of the present season. Hunting Song heads the list of winning sires with 37 wins, 51 platings, and £7,065 in stakes. The next on the list are Beau Pere,'lB wins, 25 places, and £6,080; Foxbridge, 23, 34, £5,323; Vaals, 16, 40, £4,757; Nightmarch, 11, 24, ' £3,-251; Surveyor, 14, 17, £2,837; Safari, 6,3, £2,837; Chief Ruler, 4, 5, £2,310; Balboa, 9, 22, £2,310; Defoe 11, 16, £2,272; Iliad, 8, 21, £2,125; and Paper Money, 10, 13, £2,117/10/-. The progeny of 38 sires are credited with having won over £lOOO. Trotting MEETINGS TO COME. December 21—Reefton. December 26—Ashburton. December 26 —Gore. December 26, 27 —Westport. December 27, 28, 31 —Auckland. December 28—Winton. Promising Pacer: Mark Way, engaged, in the Snowdon Handicap at Hororata, is a promising five-year-old pacer by Jack Potts from Lydia Pointer, and is owned by Miss R. E. Leach, who a few years ago won races with St. Petrox, Mark Way has done little racing, bui at the Cheviot meeting last season he showed the makings of a useful racehorse. Bill B.’s Form: The American pacer, Bill 8., revealed his true form when he staged a determined run to win the Hurricane Handicap at New Brighton on Saturday. This is his second success over s mile and a-quarter, his inability tc start quickly having spoilt opportunities to win over a short distance. During his career, Bill B. has been a puzzle. Several times he has shaped in his training work as if he would win three or four races on end, bul has sandwiched soiree brilliant performances with several disconcerting efforts. His trainer, J. Bryce, has persevered with him, and has nevei given up hopes of getting the horse tc race up to private form. In view ol his recent achievement, it is more thar likely that Bill B. will be taken tc Auckland to contest the Auckland Cui and other important races to be decided at Epsom ah Christmas. Bill B made the trip last year, but injured e knee and could not fulfil any of his engagements.
