Mr. F. Cutbush returned yesterday, from Wellington.

A cablegram from Berne stated that M. Ernst Wetter has been elected President of the Swiss Confederation.

Mr. J. A. Gilmour, Industrial Magistrate, and his associate, Mr. W. Felton, will leave, this evening, on return to Wellington.

A Sydney cablegram announced that Aiderman S. S. Crick was yesterday unanimously re-elected as Mayor of Sydney for 1941, with an allowance at the rate of £2,000 a year.

A London cablegram reported the death of Baron Bruno Schroder, senior partner in the banking house of J. Henry Schroder & Co., London. He was born at Hamburg in 1867.

Mr E. Cooper, stationmaster at Runanga, has received notice of transfer, on promotion, to the position of senior goods clerk at Greymouth, succeeding the late Mr A. A. Smith.

Mr. R. L. J. York, Mayor of Motueka since 1931, died suddenly at the Motiieka Show on Saturday. He was aged 50 years. He contested the Motueka seat in the interests of the Labour Party in 1935.

In recognition of his distinguished services in a recent operation, His Majesty has conferred the Order of Companion of the Bath upon Air ViceMarshal K. R. Park, who was born in Thames, New Zealand.—Official Wireless.

The resignation of the librarian, Miss L. E. Rowlatt, was received with regret at the final meeting for 1940 of the committee of the Travelling Library for Rural Schools of Canterbury and Westland. Mrs. Rowlatt has been librarian since the library was founded in September 1935.

Advice has been received that Cadet Officer Elliston Dunn, a son of Mr. and Mrs. L. Dunn, George Street, Dunedin, who has been serving in the merchant navy, has been reported missing. His ship was lost by enemy action. He is a former pupil of King’s High School, and joined the merchant service soon after leaving school.—Press Assn.

Mr. H. Steel, who will leave Hokitika to-morrow, to takemossession of the Royal Oak Hotel at Carterton, was farewelled by members of the Hokitika Golf Club, on Monday evening, and was made the recipient of a presentation by Mr. G. H. Chapman, president of the club, who expressed regret at his departure, and extended best wishes to Mr. and Mrs. Steel. Mr. H. M. Coulson also made a presentation, on behalf of other friends of Mr. Steel. Mr. K. Kortegast paid a tribute to Mr. Steel’s work for the Licensed Victuallers’ Association.
