TO-DAY’S RACING NEWS

Galloping MEETINGS TO COME. December 14—Otaki-Maori. December 14 —Waipa. December 14—Hororata. December 21— Manawatu. • December 26—Waipukurau. December 26, 28— Manawatu. Decembei’ 26, 28 —Dunedin. December 26, 28—Taranaki. December 26, 30, January 1, 2— Auckland. December 28—Westland. For West Coast: Epic, Welsh Fusilier and Stock Exchange will comprise A. McMullan’s team for the West Coast, while F. Hall will have Rebel Chief, Entail, Muriet and Miss Tasta. Withdrawn: Gladynev was scratched for the Auckland Cup at 9 a.m. last Thursday. Duvich (9 a.m.), and Yogi (1 p.m.) were withdrawn from all engagements at the meeting on the same day. Lockheed: Lockheed, who is expected to go near opening his account at Hororata, is a three-year-old chestnut gelding by Foxlight from the Lackham mare Magnitude. Though trained at Riccarton, he is owned in Auckland by Mr. W. Hosking. Sir Amyas: Among those worked at Wingatui on Saturday morning was Sir Amyas, who, with Heidelberg as a companion, ran an easy six furlongs in 1.20 3-5. Present indications are to nominate Sir Amyas for the Wellington Cup. Sham Raid:

S. Barr has received Sham Raid a four-year-old brown mare by Shambles from Bon. Raid to train. She has raced recently and shown a lot of speed, though so far half a mile has been as far as she can go. It is intended to race her on the West Coast. Old Bill’s Win:

Old Bill’s win at Woodville confirmed the reports that he is a fit horse, but otherwise it did not throw much light on his Auckland prospects. Had he failed with 9.10 in the small and weakish field at Woodville, his chance in the big race at Ellerslie with 9.0 (only 61b below Beau Vite) would have looked remote.

One to Watch:

Some confidence was displayed in the ability of a horse named Swell Chance to open his winning score when making his debut in the Novice Stakes at Feilding. Though finally beaten into sixth, this “dark” one ran a creditable race, going over extra ground most of the way, and he might not be. long in entering the money among the maiden class. Natural Jumper:

The Dozer, winner of the Whangarei Cup, is trained by H. E. Gray, who won the race last year with Namara. The Dozer had not been previously successful this season, but he concluded the previous term with three wins on end, the last over fences. He is by Valette, a son of Valkyrian, and is a remarkable natural jumper, and as he is now five it is likely that he will return to fences next winter.

Betting Systems: In view of the recent discussion by the Committee of the Greymouth Jockey Club, the following comment on betting systems by the “Timaru Herald” will be of interest: “A couple of years ago there was a battle of betting systems, but win and place triumphed, and now a big majority of clubs employ the dual method. Others would do so if they were not tied to equipment that is unsuitable for win and place. Some of the smaller clubs adhere to the single pool because they believe that the thin fields they attract do not warrant a change. There is an idea that eight starters (and three place dividends) are necessary to inspire speculation, but that it not altogether correct. Where there is a strong favourite many backers prefer seven starters to eight. The place pool cut into three often offers a poor return on a favourite, and bigger operators prefer to take the risk on two chances and half the pool.”

Kumara Programme: The Programme Committee of the Kumara Racing Club has framed an attractive programme for its annual meeting on Easter Monday, which will be submitted to the General Committee for approval. There is a slight increase in the stakes, which total £675, as against £659 last year. In view of the generally poor response from open sprinters, one of these events has been deleted in favour of a hack race, so that there will be an event for maiden performers, two events for hacks, the big race, the open sprint and the Highweight for the handicappers, and two trotting events. It is reported that two trophies have already been presented, one for the owner and the other for the rider of the winner of the Kumara R.C. Handicap. Following is the tentative programme: Trial Stakes, £7O, Sifurlongs; Borough Handicap Trot (harness, £BO, 2.27 rate for one mile. 1 mile and one furlong; Dillman’s Hack Handicap, £BO, six furlongs; Kumara R.C. Handicap, £l2O and trophy, 1| miles; Flying Handicap, £B5. 5-1 furlongs (7.0 min.); Stewards Hack Handicap, £BO, one mile (previously six furlongs). Diggers’ Handicap Trot (harness), 3.5 class, 1-| miles; Taramakau Highweight Handicap, £BO, seven furlongs (previously one mile). ,

CHRISTCHURCH, December 9. “It is true that he is not engaged in what is called an essential industry, but he will be over the military age limit for overseas services on January 5, and I submit that the hardship on him will be great for very little helpfulness in the defence of the country,” said Mr. F. W. Johnston, appealing for a postponement of the Territorial training of Cyril Clarence McCarthy, horse trainer, of Riccarton, at a sitting of the Christchurch Man-Power Committee. McCarthy’s appeal was based on undue hardship, but Mr. Johnson said another ground was status. McCarthy had adopted a boy some years ago and, therefore, could not be classed as a single man. McCarthy had seven horses in training, some of them for race meetings in April, when it was likely that he would be in camp. The horses were temperamental and their training would be prejudiced by a change of trainers. . Mr. S. L. Wright (a member of the Committee) said the appeal on the .grounds of status must fail as the regulations provided only for married men with adopted children. Mr Johnston: Then the regulations are defective. Mr Barnett (chairmap) said the committee was convinced that there was no standing for an appeal on the grounds of status, but agreed that Mr Johnston should have an opportunity to look into the matter. The appeal on grounds of hardship was dismissed, subject to McCarthy not being called up before April 1.

BEAULIVRE’S DAM STUD BOOK ENTRY REFUSED SYDNEY, Dec. 3. Pass Book, the dam of Beaulivre, has been refused admission to the Australian Stud Book or its appendix. No explanation for the refusal of the mare’s entry was given. In a letter to Mr. W. H. Pearce, secretary of the breeding syndicate of Danmark Pty. Ltd., who made application for the inclusion of Pass Book in the Australian Stud Book, Mr. A. L. Yuille, keeper of the Stud book wrote: —“My committee . . . decided that the mare Pass Book and her produce could not be accepted for inclusion in the Australian Stud Book, or its Appendix.” Mr. Pearce said that the decision was unjust. It was also incomprehensible in view of the inclusion of the mare Black Tea in the last volume of the Australian Stud Book, as she traced to the same source as Pass Book, but was not in the same class as a producer. Pass Book and Black Tea both traced their descent to the mare Sharkie, who established a great family of winners in New Zealand. Sharkie was recognised as thoroughbred in New Zealand, and accepted for the New Zealand Stud Book, but she was not included among the “15 approved taproots” which were allowed to remain in the Australian Stud Book when a purge of untraceable sources was made about 1915 with Volume XI. “The Stud Book is open to a charge of inconsistency,” said Mr. Pearce, “or the principles of entry laid down by earlier keepers of the Stud Book and their committees are not accepted as precedents.” Mr. Pearce said that a former Stud

Book keeper, Mr. L. G. Rouse, apparently had no compunction in accepting Black Tea’s line as of sufficient merit to warrant inclusion in the Appendix of Volume XIV. It was Mr. Rouse who undertook the tremendous research of volumes I. to X. for the pprge that took place in Volume XI. If, after that, he was satisfied that the line of Sharkie was worth taking into the Appendix, and the Stud Book committee of that time approved the mare’s inclusion, the decision of the present committee in refusing Pass Book was the more remarkable. “Pass Book will probably have to be returned to New Zealand to breed,” added Mr. Pearce. “The ridiculous position will arise that her progeny in the Dominion will be eligible to run in the Australian Derbies, Oaks, or St. Legers. Whereas if she produced foals in Australia they would be ineligible for those races. The position is confusing.” ■ i Trotting MEETINGS TO COME. December 21—Reefton. December 26—Ashburton. December 26—Gore. December 26, 27—Westport. December 27, 28, 31 —Auckland. December 28—Winton.

Many Chances: When Rama Direct finished third in the maiden class on the first day of the Waikato meeting, three other horses were bracketed with him. The same combination ran on Saturday, when Rama Direct was again in the money, and backers had twelve chances of collecting a place dividend. Forbury Incident: It is pointed out that the chairman of the Forbury Club’s contention that there is no provision in the Rules of Trotting for the appointment of an assistant judge is incorrect. Rule 266 definitely provides for the appointment of an assistant to a judge, clerk, of scales, starter, etc., and Rule 267 provides for penalties on such an official, so it is obvious that such an appointment is legal. Probably the indifferent indexing of the rules has not made the reference easily available. On Right Lines:

Biworthy has done most of his racing on North Island courses, but for the past few weeks he has been under the care of C. S. Donald. Biworthy has not won a race this season, but last year he won £450 and on a heavy track recorded 3.30 2-5 for a mile and a-half. He is bred the right way, for he is by Worthy Bingen (by Nelson Bingen-Bertha Bell) from Worthy Chimes, who was by Worthy Bond from Queen Chimes, by Coldstream Bells-Vanquish, by Vancleve. Worthy Chimes is a half-sister to Worthy Queen, who still holds the trotting record of 2.3 3-5.

CHAMPION STAKES FORFEITS. ■ CHRISTCHURCH, December 9. Final forfeits for the Ashburton Trotting Club’s Champion Stakes are as follow: —Gold Chief, Salisbury, Gallant Maid, Mighty, Special Force, Ronald Logan, Shadow Maid, Festivity, Walter Moore, Ngarimu, bay colt by Van Derby—Ayr, bay gelding by Rey de Oro —Shore Leave.
