BOXING. s. DETROIT, December 6. The boxing promoter, Mike Jacobs, has announced that he has matched Arturo Godoy and Joe Louis for a heavyweight championship bout at Los Angeles in April. SANDERS CUP. CHRISTCHURCH, December 8. The new 14-footer Ajax, which was built by Mr F. Dobby, sen., this year, is to represent Canterbury in the contest for the Sanders Cup, now held by Auckland.
CROQUET. An inter-club match was played between the Cobden and Greymouth juniors, last week. Mrs. W. Gunn and Mrs. McLauchlin (Cobden) defeated Mrs. Sligo and Mrs. Olsen (Greymouth) 26-19. -Mrs. Higgins and Mrs. Turley (Cobden) defeated Mrs. Pring and Sandman (Greymouth) 26-23. A return match will be played this week. Gala day was held at the Makura Club’s lawns on Saturday, when interesting competitions were held. The prize winners were:—Handkerchief ’’competition, Mrs. Lawn and Mrs. Owen; circles, Mrs. A. Warnes; golf croquet, Mrs. Whibley; French croquet, Mrs. D. McKay. The semi-final in the Shallcrass Bowl was played between Mrs. Hannan (scr) and Mrs. Walmsley (3 bis), Mrs. Walmsley winning after a keen game. In the final, Mrs. Walmsley (3 bis) defeated Mrs. E. Moss (| bis).
