The New Zealanders were eight points up after 10 minutes of play, through tries by Fowler and King, the first being converted by Patterson. Oxford replied with a converted try, but then the New Zealanders, winning most of the scrums, showed much superior form. Fowler and Cooper scored two fine tries and Patterson converted both, but failed with one scored by Campbell, the only New Zealand back to get a try.
