ROSE DAY APPEAL

DISAPPOINTING RESPONSE The Greymouth Plunket Society was disappointed with the result of , its Rose Day appeal yesterday. The ? gross takings amounted to £55 and I Society will hot clear £5O. ( The President (Mrs. F. M. Dennehy) jstated that almost two-thirds of the amount was made from the sale of roses, so that the takings in the shop were very poor. While appreciating the help of the very few mothers who did come to buy, Mrs. Dennehy said that the indifference of the hundreds of mothers who regularly avail themselves of the Plunket services, was hard to understand. With three other shops in town yesterday there was much opposition and the Society was of the opinion that as Rose Day is known to be the Plunket annual appeal and was given plenty of publicity, the clashing of appeals was unfortunate. In any case, it was understood that only two shops were allowed in the Borough on any one day, the Council having given a ruling previously. Without support from the townspeople, the Society will seriously have to consider the possibility of withdrawing the service, as yester- t day’s response would not cover one j month’s outgoings. f
