TO-DAY’S RACING NEWS

Galloping MEETINGS TO COME. December 6, 7—Whangarei. December 7, 9—Woodville District. December 14—Otaki-Maori. December 14—Waipa. December 14 —Hororata. December 2-I—Manawatu. December 26—Waipukurau. December 26, 28— Manawatu. December 26, 28—Dunedin. December 26, 28—Taranaki. December 26, 30, January 1, 2— Auckland. December 28—Westland. Slow Beginner: Vai Fere looks an improved horse, but he does not appeal as a sprinter, as he is so slow to begin. Improved Hack: On Feilding form Laughing Song is one of the most improved hacks in the district. She raced very solidly each day and further successes should be in store for her. Red Cat: Red Cat finished on just behind the placed horses each day at Feilding. A little longer journey and she will be troublesome. Good Recovery: Sea-law is back again with the workers at Takanini. Owing to a slight injury, he was unable to race at Te Rapa last month, but he has made a good recovery and has lost little condition as a result of his enforced respite.

Taurangi: Taurangi, who ran second- in the New Zealand Cup, was left at Riccarton to undergo a course of treatment for a parasite, which has the effect of clogging the blood streams. It is reported that there is no possibility of her being seen out over the holiday period, and unless she responds to the treatment it is unlikely that she will race again. For West Coast: M. Conza may split his team during the holidays. Lady Magellan and Lifeguard will race on the West Coast, while Roy Bun, Skyrena and philibun, in addition to being nominated for the Coast, will be entered at Waikouaiti and Oamaru. H; Nurse intends doing the Wyndham and Southland meetings with Kilrobe, St. Cloud, Ferriby, and Winchelsea, while Aggravate will go the the Coast. A. E. Ellis Returns:

A. E. Ellis has returned to Riccarton after three months’ absence in Sydney and Melbourne. He will resume riding at Hororata, and is booked to go to Auckland at Christmas. He has been engaged to ride Beau Vite in his engagements, and will be on one of T. R. George’s candidates in the Great Northern Foal Stakes, while he will ride the Aucklandowned Foxola in the Great Northern Derby. » A Bleeder? Navua was having his first race in the Roslyn Trial Handicap at Invercargill, but unfortunately he bled, and it was not the first time that he has shown this trouble. Navua is a half-brother to Nigger Ministrel to Doublebleack, Waitoru, etc., and it will be a pity if his career is handicapped by bleeding, as he possesses plenty of speed and is an exceptionally fine looking three-year-old. Well Treated: In the Wellington Centennial Cup, run .last February, Old Bill was in receipt of 71b from Beau Vite and beat him a head, from Gladynev, 7.11, being two lengths away third. In the Auckland Cup, Old Bill will meet Beau Vite on 11b worse terms, and Gladynev on 131 b worse terms. Considering Gladynev’s later form in Australia, he has been very nicely treated through Old Bill. Woodville Riders: Riding engagements for Woodville have been announced as under: —B. H. Morris, Dainty Dell, Black Majesty, Theatre; G. R. Tattersail, Old Bill, Victoire, Gunyah; W. J. Broughton, Stairway; S.' Waddell, Dynasty, Te Ore- M. Bowden, Moradabad; B. Stowe, Captain Star; W. J. Mudford, Gayest Son, Endorsement, Bunsby Belle, Kehurangi, City Song; P. Atkins, Kathbella, Kobi, Burra Sahib, Silverhope, Isis; J. Campbell, Laughing Song; J. Forsyth, Hasten; D W. Redstone, Vascones; E. Deslandes, Collodion; T. Winiata, Shani, Master Cyklon; R. Marsh, Hunting Cat, Roeon.

Change of Stables: The Waikato paper Lynn Rey, who has been racing under the care of G. T. Mitchell for the past couple of years, has been transferred to F. J. Smith’s stable. Consistent: Kilrea has raced well this season. Since September 1 she has scored two firsts, two seconds and two thirds in seven starts. She has made progress with racing, and goes well on the big track at New Brighton. Promising Pacer: Crucible is from the Great Audubon mare Antelope, and is a young pacer of rare promise. As a three-year-old she ran second to Bonniedene in the Great Northern Derby, later winning the Devonport Handicap at'Epsom and the Tamahere Handicap at Hamilton in May, which was her last start prior to her success in the Kaipaki Handicap on Saturday. Short Wave: Short Wave, who in winning the Rukuhia Handicap, gave one of the finest trotting displays seen at Claudelands, is by Travis Axworthy from Security, by Worthy Bond from Lady Haldane. As a three-year-old Security revealed fine speed, but an injury checked her racing career. Short Wave was a failure as a pacer, but since being converted by _J. A. Gerrard, he has made good, his record being five firsts and a third in seven races as a trotter. Short Wave has not yet reached the limit of his capabilities.

Unhoppled Trotters: In the two events for trotters to be decided at New Brighton, Anna’s Voyage is the only defection and these events should be popular. The field for the Burnham Handicap include several well on the way to better classes and while Marian was twice beaten at Forbury Park by the young champion Certissimus, his form is good enough to suggest that he will head the majority in this race. Milestone and Kilmorick can be depended upon to make an interesting race. In the Spitfire Handicap Anna’s Voyage, well out of her class, is the only defection and a big field of horses nicely handicapped with a 48 yards limit, should provide a splended contest. The back-markers are Tan John, winner of the Dominion Handicap, Dark Hazard a winner in his last two out of three starts, Manna’s. Son, a winner at Addington and New Brighton and Franz Derby whose solidity cannot be questioned The back-mark-ers present the problem for others and here Bush Laddie, also a two miles winner at Addington may be preferred. The Spitfire Handicap is a race of distinct possibilities and is the most open on, the programme.

Certissimus: Certissimus on his performances to date is probably the greatest three-year-old trotter ever raced in New Zealand although previous to his racing at Forbury Park the claims of Kawhaki.were being proclaimed by many who witnessed the private trials of this fine youngster. Kawhaki was killed shortly after he had won the New Zealand Trotting Stakes in 3.41 1-5. This time does not compare favourably with the 3.20 3-5 registered by Certissimus but Kawhaki raced 15 years ago. Certissimus is bred the way of a champion although his dam, like many other good matrons, did nothing on the race track. Roydon’s Pride was bred at Roydon Lodge by Mr. J. R. McKenzie who imported her dam Belle Keller (then in foal to Arion Guy) from America in 1928 and Roydon’s Pride was foaled in 1929. Arion Guy, whose brother Guy Parrish was also imported to New Zealand took a mile record of 1.59 - and later proved a big success at the Stud. Belle Keller with a mile record of 2.7-J was by Ortolan Axworthy 2.7 another successful sire. As Arion Guy was by Guy Axworthy from Margaret Parrish a grand-daughter of Bingen there is the most desirable cross of Axworthy (twice) and Bingen strains, two of the most successful in building up the sport of trotting in America. It is much too early to say that Certissimus will be. a champion but he appears to have the makings of one and if not overraced during the next 12 months he may reach the highest class.

A Big Field: In the Harewood Handicap to be run at New Brighton to-morrow, a number of most promising pacers is engaged and there is every prospect of this race being run in fast time. All have graduated from the maiden class and in a big field a margin of 24 yards separates the limit horses from the back markers. From the limit 13 horses will face the barriers but this is well within the safety number allowed at the mile and a-quarter post on the New Brighton track. Recent .winners include Happy Man, Blue Grattanita, and Single Star while Colossal, Latest Edition and William Potts have all raced well enough to suggest that they have chances in this race. Happy Man’s

win at Forbury Park in 3.21 2-5 for a mile and a-half was perhaps the most impressive effort and a repetition would find him hard to dispose of. Colossal ran two seconds at For-? bury Park to Blue Diamond in 3.24 4-5 and to Happy Man in 3.18 2-5 for a mile and a-half, performances that merited somehting better than a that merited something better than a true form when she won the Little River Trot at the Banks Peninsula meeting when she beat Happy Man. Latest Edition showed a return to form at Ashburton last Saturday and he may be improved by the race but the best of the limit division appear to be Happy Man, Colossal and Single Star, the last-named a decisive winner in the Borough Handicap at the Wellington meeting. Over two miles he registered 4.28 2-5. On the 12 yards mark is Bronze Eagle, whose great reputation has not been justified of public performance. He is a good pacer however, and will be well suited by the big grass track. Little Derby is a most consistent pacer and seldom runs a bad race while Sister Polly although racing against a big field is a possibility.

The chairman said the position was governed by the rules, and no judge was entitled to have an assistant. It was a breach of the rules. Mr. J. Stevens was appointed judge for the remainder of the season. A complaint by the starter, Mr. A. J. Hastings, that one of the stewards, Mr. H. Halliday, had accused'-him of making a bad start in the last race, was also considered. After a discussion, Mr. Haliday apologised.
