SUBVERSIVE STATEMENT
AUCKLAND MEN ARRESTED [per press association.] AUCKLAND, December 6. Charged with publishing a subversi,ve statement at Auckland yesterday, four men, arrested last night, appeared at the Police Court to-day. They were Phillip Leslie Hardcastle, 32, carpenter; Herbert Henry Swain, 31, carpenter; Henry Joseph Hurman, 39, carpenter; Alec Silverman, 27, cabinetmaker. The charge sheet stated that all were born in England. Detective Sergeant Walsh said these men pasted, stickers on telegraph poles and other places, advising that no more troops should go overseas. Other alleged subversive literature was also found in their, possession. He asked for a remand to December 16. Mr. Julius Hogben asked for bail. The Magistrate (Mr. Morling) granted a remand and -allowed bail, each in his own recognisance of £lOO, or equivalent sureties.
