TO-DAY'S RACING NEWS

Galloping MEETINGS TO COME. December 6, 7—Whangarei. December 7, 9—Woodville District. December 14—Otaki-Maori. December 14—Waipa. December 14—Hororata. December 21— Manawatu. December 26—Waipukurau. December 26, 28— Manawatu. December 26, 28—Dunedin. December 26, 28—Taranaki. December 26, 30, January 1, 2— Auckland. December 28—Westland.

Don’t Forget: , , Don’t Forget is booked lor the Auckland Racing Club’s Summer meeting, and is to contest the Great Northern Derby, in which he will be ridden by L. J. Ellis.

Agreeable Colt: The Psychology mare Agreeable has foaled a colt at the Flaxmere Stud to Lord Quex. The foal is a full-brother to Amiable, holder of the Australian and New Zealand mile record of 1 min.

Still a Hack: Don Quex, who was confidently supported when he scored in the Champion Hack Handicap at Levin, is still eligible for hack events, this success being only his third. However, his form lately has been consistently good.

By Beau Pere: Algerian, by Beau Pere, who finished last season with three successive wins (the last in easy fashion in the Hack Cup at Hawera) has been put in work again at Wanganui by W. H. Dwyer. Algerian is expected to develop into a good “handicap” horse.

For Ellerslie: Saxon Tor, in his only start this season, won the Marton Railway Handicap easily from Amigo and Nigger Boy. It is intended to race him at Ellerslie next month and, as he has been largely cured of his hard pulling, his appearance will invest open sprints with interest. Feilding Winners: Du Mauri er, winner of the principal handicap at Feilding on Saturdaay is an aged gelding by Surveyor from Muria, and this was his first success this season. Kentucky, winner of the Flying Handicap, is a three-year-old colt by Vermeer from Lady Lois, and Saturday’s win was his third this season. A Quick Return: Harina, purchased early in the day for 400gns., by the Otaki trainer, K. Webster, made a quick return at Feilding. She led all the way to win the concluding event and was always travelling too fast for her opponents. In the finish she won by a very decisive margin.. Colossal Chief who attempted to go with her in the running, weakened at the end.

f-eilding Inquiry: S'Aftef 'the running of the Fitzroy Handicap, the seventh race at Feilding on Saturday an inquiry was held into interference in the last furlong by the winner, Vai Pere, to the horses inside him. The evidence showed that there was interference after Vai Pere had reached the front, but it was due to the horse running in; that Broughton had made every effort to stop him; and the happening was accidental.

Foreign Coin: Foreign Coin was blistered after his failure in the Welcome Stakes' at Riccarton and since resuming work at Trentham he has not shown any signs of the skin soreness accountable for his Riccarton lapse. Many sound judges hold the view that Foreign Coin is the best two-year-old to race this season and his next opportunity of returning to the winning list will be in the Great Northern Foal Stakes at Ellerslie. Leading Jockeys: At the conclusion of last weekend’s racing, the list of winning horsement was as follows:— W. Broughton 29, H. Wiggins 17, L. J. Ellis 14, B. H. Morris 14, A. Jenkins 13, W. Mudford 13, N. Howard 12, P. Spratt 12, G. Tattersall 12, W. Ellis 10, S. Waddell 10, F. Cleaver 9, H. Stewart 9, R. McTavish 9, D. Redstone 9, C. G. Goulsbro 8, D. Burgess 8, C. Wilson 8, L. grey jockey club MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Committee of the Greymouth Jockey Club was held yesterday afternoon, there being present Messrs T. E. Coates (Chairman), H. D. James, W. H. Parfitt, A. M. Carroll and M. J. Fogarty (Secretary). Mrs. W. Ward was granted the right to conduct an ice-cream stall at the forthcoming meeting. The Racing Conference advised that Mr. A. R. Ellis, of Wellington, would act as totalisator inspector at the meeting.

The Trotting Association wrote approving the programme for the New Year meeting and advising that Mr. J. S. Shaw would attend as stipendiary steward. The Chairman said that there was every possibility of a large number of horses coming to the West Coast Coast for the Christmas circuit, and asked what was the possibility of changing to the win and place system of betting for the Club’s meeting. Several members spoke in favour of the win-and-place system, as opposed to single-pool betting as used previously by the Club, but it was decided to defer further consideration of the matter until the nominations for the meeting had been received, to give an indication of the probable size of the fields.

Trotting MEETINGS TO COME. December 7—Waikato. December 7 —New Brighton T.C. December 21—Reefton. „ December 26—Ashburton. December 26—Gore. December 26, 27—Westport. December 27, 28, 31—Auckland. December 28 —Winton. Good Trotter: Shortwave has won five times in the last six starts, and the Ashhurst trotter would be a welcome visitor to Canterbury meetings. Marlene’s Mark: Her win in the New Zealand Trotting Cup has brought. Marlene back to a 4.24 assessment, and should she meet Dusky Sound again over two miles will have to concede him 12yds start. Well Beaten: The three-year-old filly Shadow Maid found the older horses too good for her in the Mayfield Handicap at Ashburton. She was back in eighth place after a furlong, and was beaten when the straight was reached. Fast Time: The fact that all the horses in the big field in the Melrose Trot at Ashburton were on 3.43 indicated that none had won a race or collected sufficient place money to warrant an alteration in its assesment. Yet Indian Clipper was required to step 3.21 3-5 to beat Swagger Jack.

Shows Promise: Swagger Jack gave a solid performance to beat all but Indian Clipper in the Melrose Handicap at Ashburton on Saturday. This is the second time this season he has been runner-up, and he promises to make sufficient progress to win more than one race before the season ends. He was ’bred at Riversdale by Mr S. Lynch, and was five years old when he was registered on June 6, 1939. He began racing in Townley’s colours, but after two unsuccessful efforts he was transferred to O. E.
