Mr. W. B. Gilbert returned yesterday, from Christchurch.
A London cablegram announced the death of John Ball, the golfer. He was born at Hoylake in 1861.
Sir Harry Batterbee, and Lady Bat-\ terbee, left Greymouth, this morning: for Christchurch, by car. They will leave for ‘Wellington, to-night.
Sergeant R. C. Mcßobie, of Christchurch, arrived to-day to relieve at Greymouth, pending a permanent appointment to replace Sergeant A. H. Barnes, recently transferred to Taihape.
Mrs E. A. McMillan, who is residing with her daughter, Mrs Earl, High Street, has received advice that her son Neville, was steward on the Holmwood, which has been reported missing.
The death has occurred of Sir John Sinclair, formerly a prominent member of the legal profession, who was associated with the public life of Dunedin and the Dominion for nearly 50 years. He was born in 1850 in Anglesea, North Wales.

An enjoyable evening was spent at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. J. Thompson, Dobson, to celebrate the birthday of Miss Phyllis Ida Thomas, second daughter of Mrs. Thomas, of Omoto, and the late Mr. F. Thomas, and her engagement to Mr. Jack Uren, of Dobson. The marriage will take place on December 7. News has been received by the High Commissioner for the United Kingdom in New Zealand, Sir Harry Batterbee, of the marriage last Wednesday, of his niece, Miss Isobel Biggar, to Mr Derek Chidell, an officer in the Royal Air Force. The message was sent from Inverness, Scotland, where Miss Biggar has been stationed for some time as a member of the Women’s Air Force Auxiliary, and it is. presumed that she was married there. Miss Biggar came to New Zealand with Sir Harry and Lady Batterbee and lived with them till May of this year, when she returned home.
