WEST COAST TERRITORIALS

IN CAMP FOR CHRISTMAS Advice has been received from the Army Department, that the concluding date for the training of the Territorials, at present in camp at Burnham, will be December 29, instead of December 21, as originally notified. The question as to whether those men who have not by that date completed a full three months in camp are to return to complete their period after the New Year, is still under consideration by the Army Board and its decision is awaited.

MASTER BUILDERS’ REQUEST. AUCKLAND, December 2. Immediate action to assist in meeting the serious position in the building industry thi'oughout the Dominion, was urged by the Master Builders’ Association at a largely-attended meeting to-day. The meeting considered the extreme shortage of labour, particularly carpenters and general labourers, and unamimously resolved to approach the Prime Minister with a view to delaying the further calling up of skilled tradesmen for a period of three months, the position to be reviewed at the end of February. Also.to urge that skilled tradesmen, now in camp, be released for three months, and that Mr Webb be asked to arrange a conference next week with the trade unions concerned, with a view to an extension of the working week, the additional hours to be paid for on the basis of the flat rate.
